Symington The mosquito season is here again, and in some communities the public may desire to have freedom from this pest. In considering the problem of eradication and control of mosqui toes, we must fully realize that we may have several kinds of mospuitoes in one locality, and that these differ ent varieties may differ decidedly in customs of life and travel habits. Along the seacoast, from Maine to Texas, we have a mosquito called “Aedes Sollicitans” that breeds in brackish water, and which travels long distances voluntarily w'ith light | breezes. This species emerges in large | numbers from time to time and be-1 comes very annoying. Also, in recent years, with the development of oil i fields and gas wells, inland sources; of salt water under pressure have been , released and the water has been | brought to the surface, and this for- | mer coastal mosquito has established | itself in several ^ inland localities where it formerly did not exist. In villages, towns, and cities we j have local mosquito nuisance prob-! lems for which we ourselves are' I largely responsible. These local nui-1 sances are caused by a mosquito i know’n as the Culex, and in the south- j em states also by another known as the “Stegomyia,” which is closely as sociated with many but reproduces only in fairly clean water. Both of these mosquitoes reproduce in water containers which we allow to be so placed as to catch and hold rain wa ter. The Culex also propagates in enormous quantities in dirty water and in collections of water heavily VIEW MANUEY PINE.
