Managing Director Resident .Manager n During the hunting season the work on the fire lanes along the Fort Bragg boundary has been practically sus pended, and the CCC forces moved over to the route along the pole line from Pinehurst to Southern Pines. The route is cut out all the way be tween the two towns, running through the woods the entire distance except that the Morganton road out of Southern Pines is used to the top of the Cemetery hill. There a straight line follows the line of the telephone poles, but with the wide avenue cut through a new picture is presented which is not only practical as a fire lane, but also is picturesque as a long vista of several miles from the hill tops of Pinehurst and Southern Pines. It is very likely that one of these days this will become one of the fav- 1 ored bridle trails if it should not ul- ] timately be improved to the point I where it can be taken over by driv- j ers as well as riders of horses The outlook is so attractive that it is worth ! while to stop on the hill above , Southern Pines just to catch the glimpse of that view of the inter vening valley, anil its introduction of the wide sweep of country between the two villages. The outline of Pine hurst against the .sky is particularly pleasing. From this line another one has been marked out, following pretty closely the survey of Mr. Manning when he laid out the pkin for the improvement of the lands owned by Judge Way, Donald Ross and Frank Maples to the eastward of the Mid Pines area. This added line will open the whole heart of the legion that contracts with Pinehur-st, Southern Pines and Knoll- wood, and affoi'd an opportunity for ri(ters to traverse the big parkland that is full of charm to those who like to drift about the piney woods and knobs. Get Along, Doggie And Get Your License or You’ll Find Yourself in Clutches of the Law If Fido or Bruno or any mem ber of the dog family fails to show up at supper time and if said dog is not wearing a “license plate,” his owner will have reason to sup pose that doggie is in the clutches of the law for the Board of Coun ty Commissioners is enforcing the order in November requiring that taxes on dogs be paid at once. Tags are available at the office of the county tax collector. Anyone who is not able to pay his taxes in full may take care of the dog tax and procure the tag for his dog and meet his other obligations at another date. An advertisement elsewhere in the paper makes the situation clear. suspected a decided improvement over things as they have existed, and the committee say that the organization that exists is much more likely to be effective than to lose time trying to build and train a new organization which may be as eccentric in its func tioning as the present one has been charged with being. This is not a time for a great deal of talk, but for action, and these com mittees, working with the county commissioners and the school board and backed in whatever they do by the whole people, will accomplish some thing if anything at all can be done. They will plan workable .schemes and see that they work, and they propose to be open forums, accessible to every body, backed by the full strength of the law% and sincere in their determi- ! nation to get results. , They ask everybody to help, and to 11| go along with them in their effort, and they are justified in asking this and in having it enthusiastically done.
