The story premise is novel, ty ing up a racketeer angle which takes a ludicrous comedy twist with liber al dashes of health, beauty and phy- .lical developing propoganda, and in troduces the thrifty International Beauty Ckintest winners brounght from all over the world. Larry (Bus ter) Crabbe, the Olympic swimming chaihpion. is attractive in the lead, while Miss Lupino from England with a stage heritage of four generations has a distince charm and beauty. Sparkling wit and sophisticated humor pervade the melodramatic story of “Long Lost Father," John Barrymore’s newest starring produc tion for RKO-Radio, coming to the Pinehurst Theatre Wednesday, Febru ary 7th, matinee and night with Hel en Chandler and Donald Cook in a notable cast.. Adapted from a novel by a “best-selling’ author, G. B. Stern, “Long Lost Father’’ traces a father’s conflict with his daughter. Carl Bellairs, suave London night club manag:er, and Lindsey Lane, daji- cer, meet for the first time in twenty years, although they are father and daughter, when she comes to enter tain in his establishment. Helen Chan dler plays the daughter and Donald Cook enacts her fiance. John Barry more as Carl Bellairs receives addi tional support from Ferdinand Gott- schalk, E. E, Clive, Reginald Shar- land, Alan Mowbray and Natalie Moorhead. Greta Barbo is back after nearly two years absence, be‘ter than she ever was, and in a vehicle which has class caliber and mass appeal, a bril liant historical drama in which the romance of a Queen for a foreign am bassador is the motivating force. There is about her “Queen Cristina,” not only the heroic quality such as the role demands of a fine actor, but a new depth of feeling. All of these qualities which as Anna Cristie. Ca- vallini (in “Romance,”) Grusinskaya, (in "Grand Hotel”) have command ed attention by their enduring beau- i ty, have been intensified here; have ; been etched with a glamour which ' has a nw gravity and matur'ly. j Grow'th of this kind is possible only for a really great artist. The story is I a happy selection for the new talent I she has to give; a skillful blend of i history and fiction in which the Nor- die star, looking as alluring as ever, i gives a performance which merits nothing but the highest praise. I “Queen Cristina” is the attraction at the Pinehurst Theatre Friday, Feb- i ruary 9th, matinee and night, ■Vt Southern Pines Which is the stronger love—the love j of a woman for a man or the love of ' a mother for her child? In “Gallant Lady,” the latest 20th Century pic- I ture which will be the attraction at ' the Southern Pines Theatre, Monday, [ Tue.sday and Wednesday. February I 5. 6, 7, with a Tuesday matinee, beau- I tiful Ann Harding embodies the an- j swer to this age old question. Faced ! with the alternative of becoming re united wi.th her little son after years I of separation under the penalty of , silence regarding her true identity, or of disclosing the facts and thereby ■ wrecking his future, Ann makes a decision which changes the w'hole ‘ course of her life—and the boy’s. A brilliant cast, including Clive Brook, ' Tullio Carminati, Otto Kruger, Dickie Moore and Janet Beecher supports Miss Harding. Having three comedy teams, each with plenty of good material. "Six of a Kind,” the attraction at the Southern Pines Theatre Thursday, ; Friday and Saturday, February 8, 9, ; 10, with a Saturday matinee, will ; prove to be just what the laugh-fans ordered. A cast containing Charles Haggles, Mary Boland, W. C. Fields, ! Alison Skipworth, and Burns and Al- I len, is something to talk about, and j in this production, they carry on a { carnival of comedy that brings the ! laughs so fast and furious that it is : impossible to number them. Burns ' and Allen have an entirely new line ; of chatter and gags. Fields in a j pool table sequence wherein he is un- j able to control the cue, will leave you j limp. As an added attraction, we {are pleased to announce Walt Disney’s I latest all technicolor Silly Symphony, i “The China Shop." tlon upon the above resolution. S8592 CERTIFIC.XTE OF CH.XNGE LEGAL NOTICES At the annual stockholders meet ing of the Pinehurst Building & Loan Association the following were elect ed to serve as directors for the year 1934: W. L. Dunlop, E. B. Keith, G. M. Cameron, I. C. Sledge. J. F. Tay lor, A P Thompson, W R. Viall and H. D. Vail. President James W. Tufts presid ed over the meeting, which a large number attended, and he spoke brief ly of the advantages of investing in building and loan stock. Herbert D. Vail, secretary and treasurer of the association submitt ed his annual report which says in part: “The balance sheet sent out with the notice of our annual meeting shows a reduction in the assets of our association amounting to $11,- 677.87 over the balance sheet of De cember 31, 1932. This reduction is due to the withdrawals and maturities be ing greater than new sales and new mortgages. During 1933, the hardest year our association has yet seen, we were forced to play a game of watch ful waiting. The year had hardly be gun when all the banks in the coun try closed their doors for a banking holiday. Some of these banks have not yet opened. Not being able at the time to forsee the opening date of our bank we were compelled to withhold making new’ loans on property and put ourselves in position to serve our stockholders in case they wished to borrow or withdraw their savings in our care. This state of affairs naturally han dicapped our operations, but with one or two exceptions, we were able to pay on demand all applications for stock loans and withdrawals. Without e.xception, all withdrawals were made from necessity and not through fear. Our association is just as safe today as it W’ere when our assets were up to $115,000.00 three year ago. “That is what makes building and loan stock so attractive. Loans made three years ago when times were bet ter and land values higher have been paid down to where our equity in all cases is low enough to assure pay ment in full even though foreclosure may be necessary. Loans made now are made on present day valuations and the appraisals are made by a committee of three appointed from the Board of Directors by the presi dent of thf- association.” Since the annual meeting the as sociation has made three new loans and is entirely caught up on its ap plications.
