FOR THE LEGISLATLRE General William Alexander Smith, commander of the North Carolina Confederate Veterans who was among the prominent visitors to Southern Pines for Military Day of Festival Week last Friday, died at his home in Ansonville on Monday night. He wa.s stricken with a sudden heart at tack. Though 91 years of age. Gener al Smith appeared in excellent health when here last week. He was born January 11, 1843 in Anson County of distinguished Eng lish lineage. He was educated in the schools of that county and then en tered Davidson College. He completed the first year there and was making a high scholastic record in his sophomore year until April, 1861 when the War Between the States broke out. Richardson, cashier of the Bank of Pinehurst, this week purchased the Sycamore Cottage, recently partially destroyed by fire, from I. C. He was critically ill for six months and the Malvern Hill wound left him a crip ple for life. After years of success as a mer chant. he retired from the merchan dising business and became president of the Yadkin Falls Manufacturing Company, of the Eldorada Cotton Mills of the Carolina Construction Company. General Smith succeeded his broth er-in-law, Captain Frank Bennett, as commander of the Anson Camp, U. C, V., and served for some years as inspector-general of the Second Bri gade, U. C. V., with the rank of ma jor on the staff of General W. L. London. Surviving in addition to Mrs. Smith is one adopted son, B. D. Nelms, of Anson county.
