Richard Dix, the star—Zane Grey,
the author—the perfect team to film
thrilling tales of the winning of the
West I Their talents have been com
bined before in the making of mo
tion pictures, with great success, and
now they have joined hands again
and made "West of the Pecos,” one
of Grey’s best ,stori((n ot the old
frontier, and the attraction at the
Pinehurst Theatre, Monday, February
18th, matinee and night. No star in
screen history has been as success
ful as Dix in creating the gallant
characters of pioneer times. The v col
orful role of "Recos Smith,” fits Dix
to the traditional T, and RKO-Radio
feels that the company and the star
have added another brilliant portrait
to the large gallery of Western he
roes. Laid in the Pecos country, the
film abounds in the thrilling episodes
which are one of Grey’s specialties
—notably the fording of a flooded
river by a train of covered wagons
and a herd of stock.
The most startling innovation in
screen entertainment since motion
pictures were first discovered is of
fered in "Sequoia,” M-G-M's nature
drama featuring Jean Parker, the at
traction at Pinehurst Wednesday,
Febrviary 20th, matinee and night. A
human romance is blended into a
story of American animal life con
taining such imheard of scenes as a
mountain lion and a deer, nature’s
most deadly enemies, playing togeth
er like lambs; hundreds of deer on
migration into high Sierra regions
never before photographed by a cam
era; mountain lions and wolves stalk-

The pagan beauty of Jean Parker
has never been brought out to bet

adventure and love while helping her
naturalist father.
Shirley Temple, sensational baby
star, endears herself again in a ve
hicle especially tailored to her extra
ordinary talents. Charming, lovable,
without the slightest trace of pre
cociousness, Shirley will capture aud- |

personality radiates as one in a mil-1

trait that is noteworthy. Robinson,
who elevated tap dancing to an art, is
a seii'jation in his first picture, with
his comedy and dancing. The cast also |
includes Sidney Blackmer, Hattie Mc
Daniel, pickaninies and colored choris
ters.

A recent story by Arthur Somers
Roche is the foundation of “Shadow
of Doubt,” the attraction at the Sou
thern Pines Theatre, Monday, Tues
day, Wednesday, Feb. 18, 19, 20, with
a Tuesday matinee. “Shadow ot
Doubt” includes many elements au
tomatically recommending it as an
entertainment feature, rich story
quality and fast tempo, plus capable
delivery point up a well-balanced cast
headed by Ricardo Cortez, Virginia
Bruce, Constance Collier, of stage
fame, Isabell Jewell, Betty Furness,
Arthur Byron and others. Essentially
it is a uniquely solved murder mys
tery, running the entire scale of es
sentials necessary to a romance ting
ed, comedy-relief shudder picture.
As hauntingly tender a love story
as ever graced the screen, in the
memory of movie fans, "One More

stars, Janet Gaynor and Warner Bax

brilliantly executed version of the
Robert Nathan best seller which
created a furore when published. They

BIRD CLL’B NEWS
An ideal mid-winter day with the
sun shining and the air not too cold
to permit the hunters to enjoy the
out-of-towns, inspired 17 members
and two guests to attend the Tuesday
meeting of the Southern Pines Bird
Club. The number of different spe
cies seen on the hunt was increased
this week to twenty-three.
It was noted with interest by many
members that almost as great a va
riety of birds may be seen in their
yards where food trays and bird baths
have been provided as in the woods
nearby. The startlingly beautiful spec
tacle of four cardinals and several
blue jays in close proximity In her
yard was spoken of by one member.
Another member, brand new at this
bird study pastime, has found that
observing the individualities of the
different species of birds, their feed
ing habits, their association with
other birds, friendly or otherwise, one
of the most absorbing and fascinat
ing occupations she has ever engag
ed in during a long busy life spent
wholly in a large city, where bird
study was limited chiefly to the om
nipresent English sparrows and un
welcome starlings.
The t-iioi is read by some 10,000
persons each week. Regular advertis
ing would drive your message home
to these prospects.
