ON'THE EVE OF ELEC'TION The qualified v'oters of South ern Pines nominate cantlidates for Mayor and the Board of Commissioners tonight, Friday, and from tiiese nominees elect tho>-.)e who are to serv^e them for the next two years. It therefore seems a good time to review your city’s condition, that you may be fully acquainted when you cast your ballots with what those in administrative capaci ties have to administer for you in that period. The total expense of operat ing the city, including retire ment bonds, interest payments and the operation and mainte nance of the water plant and dis tribution system, from July 1st, 19.36 to June 30th, this year, will be $107,678.36. We have these figures from City Clerk Howard Burns. Itemized, they 5how payments of $23,000 for retirement of town bonds, $31,- 110 for interest on town bonds. The general operating expense ii)f the tov\7i. maintenance of itreets, sewers, lighting, plant ing of parkways, the Fire, Po lice and Administrativ'e de partments, is $37,735.3'>. Main tenance of municipal parks, in cluding the building which houses the city administrative office^i, is $1,273; the mainte nance of Mount Hope Cemetery, $560; the fire department build ing account $1,000, the opera tion of the water plant and maintenance of the distribution system, $13,000. These make up the $107,678.36 total. The town 'holds in investments $16,000 of its own bonds for sinking fund purposes, bonds which were bought for $12,643 and therefore show considerable appreciation. Southei’n Pines bonds are selling above par on today’s market. The town owns a building which cost $3,080 and is leased for $1,500 a year—not a bad investment.
