Slaughter on Highways Must Cease, Says Governor in Asking C<M)peralion Governor Hoey, asserting that the I “slaughter on the highways must “cease,” has designated next week as "Safety week in North Carolina.” Pointing out that an average of nearly three persons are killed daily in motor vehicle accidents in the state, the Governor called on the “whole citizenship of North Carolina to make this week tell mightily in the promotion of public safety on our highways throughout the entire year.” A safety program designed to “pro tect your life and the life of your child,” will be announced during the week, the Governor said. His statement follows in part: “The State Association of County Commissioners and the Highway Saf ety division are jointly promoting this special period of safety obsei'vance. “I am asking every minister in the state to call attention in the Sunday service to this important matter and urge compliance with the rules of safety by every person who drives a motor vehicle and every pei'son who walks or travels in any other way upon the public roads. The same appeal should be made in every public school and collcge. The civic clubs are urged to conduct safety programs and otherwise aid in making all the people safety con scious. “The need for a safety program is great, the policy is education for those who will be reasonable and enforcement for those who will not., “The slaughter on the highway^} | must cease. The death rate can be lessened. It has been appalling for several years. 1,123 Killed in Year “Last year 1,123 persons were kill ed on the highways of this state, an avei'age of nearly three persons a day, and 7,990 were injured. North Carolina’s record is bad in this par ticular and it must be improved. For the whole 18 months our soldiers participated in the World War, only 629 from North Carolina were killed in battle, while nearly twice that many die in peace times by accidents PINEHURST and " SOUTHERN PRESENTS PINES scarring TWINS BOBBY At Pinehurst Sunday Night (Only) March 6th with FHANK CRAVEN • SPRING 6Y1NGT0N Dir«ct*d by Vim. Sports editors knew not what it was all about. One day a story from one town, next from another—all the same stuff. A few weeks ago press associations put their respective feet down. “You’ll have to do something about it,” they informed Pinehurst and Southern Pines. And Pinehurst and Southern Pines press bureaus appeal ed to the Sandhills Steeplechase and Racing Association. Directors put heads together. And eventually out came an idea. The association moved, seconded and carried a motion to ask “Bob’ Harlow of the Pinehurst Press Burean and Howard Burns of the Southern Pines scribal force to toss a coin for this year’s news coverage of events in that No Man's Land midway be tween. With the understanding that if Pinehurst won the toss and the coverage—this year. Southern Pines automatically handled it under her dateline next year, and so on ad in finitum. And with the further agree ment that whoever handled it any year, the race course should always be referred to as “midway between’’ the two towns. Well, “Bob” and Howard met the other night in front of the treatre— j just by chance. And just by chance ' an official of the steeplechase asso ciation came along. He tossed the , quarter. “Heads,” yelled Pinehurst’s Harlow. It was tails. So it’s Southern Pin^s this year, i good people. And if by chance Burns should accidentally leave it out of, some story some day please just mentally insert it yourself—you ; know, “midway between Pinchurac i and Southern Pines.” on our highways, in one year. j “The National Safety Council ■ states that we have reduced our per- I centage of deaths over the last three years 14 percent, based upon the | number of cars licensed and the j amount of gasoline consumed. ! “This is not enough ... we are i etill one of the 10 worst States for' fatal accidents. It is encouraging to know that the past January was j the best January for five years from! the standpoint of accidents.” I STATE REVENUE MAN HERE ' TO ASSIST TAXPAYERS^ A representative of the State De-1 partment of Revenue will be in the | office of Attorney W. Rates as the best of Gladys Swarthout offerings both in the musical and romantic phases and will serve to swing thi.'j excellent Diva’s stock on the upward curve.” The above is a wire received from Hollywood on February 16th, relative to Gladys Swarthout’s new production, “Romance In The Dark,” the attraction at the Pinehurst Thea tre, Sunday night (only) March 6th at 8:30. The vocalizing of populai and classical selections is most cap ably handled by Gladys Swarthout and John Boles while the latter in dulges in impressive comic interludes with John Barrymore. Katherine Hepburn .revealing her talent as a comedienne with Cary Grant opposite her, in “Bringing Up Baby” is the attraction at Pinehurst Monday, March 7th, at 3:00 and 8:30 p. m. and is offered as one of the outstanding laugh-shows of the sea son. Backed by a sparkling cast head ed by Charles Ruggles and May Rob son, the stars “go to town” in up roarious fashion. When good actors get together something exciting is bound to happen. Which is just another way of saying that the new est musical, “Start Cheering” the attraction at Pinehurst, Wednesday, March 9th, at 3:00 and 8:30 p. m., is a whole lot of swell entertainment. It’s tuneful and funny and fast, and it boasts one of the largest collec tion of star names the screen has seen under one roof. Walter Connolly, Jimmy Durante, Joan Perry, Charles Starrett, Professor Quiz (of radio fame) are in the cast. About a year ago, Hal Roach, past master of unvarnished cinema, re vamped production plans and embark ed upon an ambitious undertaking of providing entertainment which would take upon itself a mantale of dignity insofar as artistry and situation was concerned. His first new type produc-' tion was “Topper” the success of which spread quickly throughout the land. The second is ‘‘Merrily We Live,” the attraction at Pinehurst Fri-; day, March 11th at 3:00 and 8:30 p. I m. For a cast, he selected Constance Bennett, Billie Burke, Alan Mow bray, Brian Aherne, Tom Brown, Pat- j sy Kelly, Ann Dvorak, Bonita Gran ville and Clarence Kolk. At Southern Pines So tremendously successful a pic ture was the picturization last Spring of Penrod and Sam” by the immor tal Booth Tarkington that demands poured in to the studio for another story dealing with Tark’s resource ful and amusing young hero, that not only was another one made in the shape of “Penrod and His Twin Brother,” the attractio i at Uie Sou thern Pines Theatre Muiiday and Tuesday, March 7th and 8th, with a Tuesday matinee, but there is to be a third and goodness kaows how Brother” brings to the screen both of the brilliant 13-year-old Mauch twins who made such a tremendous hit in “The Prince And the Pauper,” instead of merely Billy wiio was alone in the fir.st of the stories. Oncc again, playing Penrod's parents, are Frank Craven and Spiing Byingt^n. “The Big Broadcast of 1LI38,” fea turing W. C. Fields, is playing a re turn engagement at the Soutliein Pines Theatre VV'ednesday and Thurs day, March 9th and 10th, with a Thursday matinee. Dorothy Lansou:’, Bob Hope, Shirley Ross, Ben Biue, Martha Raye, Grace Bradley, Rufa Davis and many other make up a superb supporting cast. Another revival, and one long to be remembered is one of W’ill Rog ers’ most popular productions, “The Country Chairman” presents this be- loved comedian in his happiest role as George Ade’s uproarious small town politician. He wins elections (and hearts) with his crackling wit and homespun Americanism. '‘The County Chairman” is the attraction at Southern Pines Friday and Satur day, March 11th and 12th with a Saturday matinee. ntmttmnttttmmtittttttitiititttmmttutttttnmutttntmtttttmtmntuuxatttmmm PATCH’S FOR INEXPENSIVE SMARTNESS OUR TAILORED SUITS $18.50 Frilly Blouses or Organdie-Crepe or Georgette ....
