Seawell, G.O.P. Candidate For Legislature^ States His Platform Favors Abolishment of Absentee RilM, L(»nj>’ Sheriff Term, Help For Industry, Pensions j Herbert F. Seawell, Jr., Republican* candidate for the State Legislature from Mooro county, who is ill with influenza at his home in Carthage, gave the following statement of his plalfot.ii to The Pilot tliis week: Having been .requested to make a stali'menl concerning my candidacy for the Legislature, I lespectfully submit the following: It h-is been suggested that I am protiably running for some other of- tice to lake effect in the future. This 19 not true- I am lunning for the Legislature and expect to represent the people of Moore county if elect ed. FIRST: The absentee ballot must Jie abolished in North Carolina. The tecent fraud and stealing in the pri- Kiary in this state is a reproach to the people of North Carolina of whom I am a part. I shall vote to repeal Uiis law. SKCOND: I favor election of Sher iff and Coroner for a period of four .years instead of two years. The rea son for this ig that, as much as pos- ■iible, the Sheriff’s office should keep ■out of politics, A man elected for Xwo years is constantly playing poli tics in order to stay in the office. THIRD: It is a reproach to this State that young men and women are required to attend college four years to equip themselves to teach .school and then are able to earn only about the game wage as some person who tan neither read cov write. By elim inating political waste every teacher in North Carolina coukl receive a tninimum of $100.00 per month. This State should also adopt the teachers’ retirement fund. FOURTH: I favor the pi emotion and development of every industry in Uiis county from the talc mines and ^Ik mills at Hemp in the west of tlie county, the manufacturing in terests in West End, Aberdeen, Vass and other points and including our jKcond largest industry, that of the Teaort business in Moore county. Wj '<annot afford to drive people out ol. For Legislature HERBERT F. SEAVVELL, JR. this county through unfair tax me thods. I believe that our resort bus iness can be increased and tripled in volume by proper cooperation with those who come here to spend their money. To treat them unkindly and unfairly about tax matters will do us great injurj'. Proper co-operation and advertising can make Pinehurst, Southern Pines. Pine Needles and Knollwood the most popular resort portion in North America. FIFTH: Some one asked me to make a statement about old age pen sions. I think to give some old per son S8.00 a month and call it a pen sion and expect that person to exist on this is almost insulting. If we are to have a pension for old people it certainly should not be less than $30.00 per month. I make my offer for election on the basis of good citizenship. I shall stand or fall on this issue. If I were a stranger in Moore county I would expect people to use politics against me, but the people of Moore county know me and they know for what I stand. As for politics, men make the party; the party cannot make the Woman’s Club Nets $35 | For School Lunches i CORNELIA, ELMER CAMERON, BOTH OF VASS, M.ARRIED Hallowe’en Stunt Show and Carnival (ireat Success at Vass-Laiieview School Sponsored by the Vass Woman’s Clubs, a Hallowe’en stunt show and carnival which netted a little more than $35.00 wag given Monday even ing in the Vass-Lakeview School building. The club wishes to express its ap preciation to all who helped with the evening’s program and to all who gave it their patronage. man. I trust that no man or woman in Moore Couny will vote against me merely because of politics; this is not a sufficient or a sensible reas on. The dust of all my ancestors, from those who fought at Moores Creek to my three great uncles who were kill ed in the battle of Gettysburg, is buried here in Moore county. Wheth er elected or defeated, I shall always be loyal to Moore county and to the people of North Carolina, politics to the contrary notwithstanding.
