A WOM.'VN’S PART IN DEFENSE
The great question among women!
during these days of crisis continues
to be—what can we do to help niake \
America strong? !
As our great industrial system ex- -
pands and production of materials for
defense mounts the tempo of our na-,
tional life quickens and We oufselves
want more to do. We long to have
seme part in pieparing this country,
for whatever role it will be called
upon to play in world affairs. |
B'lt what should it be? What serv
ice can we render to this country
that has made us the freest, most
fortunate women in the world ?
Should we offer to work in the busy
plants and factories? Should we take
up training for some emergency? Or
must we . . . just knit?
A few months ago no one scenved
to know the answer, as women rush
ed about organizing new committees,
writing feverish letters, talking end.
lessiy to each other. But today uidi-
vidual leadei's and organizations are
beginning to agree on what women
should do for their country today. It's
not exciting but it's fumiamental and
its effects '.vill be far loaching.
Stay put. they're saying. Don't do
any more organizing or flag waving
or talking. But first, make an even
better home for your husb'ind and
children. Feed them so Ihey'll be well
and stiong. Instill in your children
the love of freedom. Iron out family
difficulties so home will bo the best
place in the world. And, second take
a more active part in your ov.com
munity government and affairs.
This la the advlre of such organi
sations as the Parent-Teachers’ As-
Fociation and the Federation of Bus
iness and Professional Women's
Clubs, and of outstanding women.
But what sort of community activi
ties, you ask?
Take this vexing question of gov
ernment spending that has reached
such undreamt-of proportions today-
If the women of each community in
the United States get together and
bring about a saving of even 10 per.
cent in local spending there would be
a saving of millions of dollars for
the country as a whole, because in
normal times more than half of our
tax money is spent in local, counfy
and state governments.
And take our belief in the deMO-
cratic system of government that is
under tire today. We can’t change
the world but we can see that every
one in our community, children and
foreign-born especially, realize how
important it is for us to keep our
free press and free radio—ovu' right
to go to church where and as we
like -our system of electing the peo
ple who run our government and our
time proved system of free enterprise
in business. If enough communities
discover what Democracy really
means and make it work better than
ever, then the nation as a whole will
be safe from all inroads against free
dom and we shall be able to pa.s.s our
I "ancient liberties” on intact to oifr
children.
