Christmas Planned
For Soldiers Here
A number of soldiers atached to
the ,57th Signal Corps, now located be
tween Southern Pines and Aberdeen,
will remain in camp over t-hristmas,
and Southern Pines townspeople will
have an opportunity to offer the men
some Chri.stmas spirit.
The Rev. F. Craighill Brown, rec
tor of Emmanuel Episcopal Church,
I who is head of local church and
home hospitality committee, this
j "eek asked all families in Southern
Pines who could entertain one or
more soldiers for Christmas dinner to
inform him immediately.
I Soldiers will be brought into town
on Christmas Day to the Episcopal
Parish house, and local hosts will meet
their soldier guests there at noon.
Mr. Brown asked that those who will
entertain soldiers for dinner telephone
him as soon as possible so that all
arrangements can be completed.
The 57th was among the first of
the Army outfits to come into this
section, before maneuvers started, and
this company will be among the last to
leave. There are now around 150
men at the camp and most of these
will be given Christmas furloughs
but the rest will have to remain here.
Army and Pinehurst
To Play Polo Sunday
Pinehurst and tort Bragg polo
teams will meet Sunday at 3 p. m.
on the Pinehurst Polo field in one of
the series of games between the offi
cers from the military reservation and
the Pinehurst players.
Merril Fink, Pinehurst's brilliant
captain, will be at his number two po
sition. B. R. Brown, Durham, will play
number one. D. O. Evans will be at
number three for Pinehurst and at
number four will be Henry Gibson

The local Rotary Club paid tribute
at its weekly meeting to three of its
members who are now serving in the
armed forces of the country.
Three empty chairs leaned against

Duncan Matthews’ place, and three

Greer Stutz, now somewhere on the
oceanE in ihe U. S. Navy; Private
Robert Dorn and Private Harold Fow
ler, U. S. Army.
Ernest Lorenson presented an arm
ed service flag to the club, with three
blue stars for the missing Rotarians.
At the meeting John Howarth, coor
dinator of local Civilian Defense, and
E. C. Stevens of the local defense
committee, outlined some of the duties '
of local defense groups.
The Rotary Club adopted a resolu-j
tion declaring the club "ready and|
eager to perform any duty or function.
