Tests Are Reported
Few Local Children Found
To Have Defective Hearing,
Social Council is Told
At the April meeting of the
Southern Pines Council of Social
Agencies, Miss Cora Beam of the
State Board of Health told of the
methods used in teaching school
children for hearing loss. It is done
in groups with an audiometer, then
those having 90 percent loss or
more are re-tested, Miss Beam said.
Of the 388 children tested in South
ern Pines, 12 had defective hearing
and of 208 tested in West Southern
Pines, 6 had defective hearing.
Of these none had enough loss of
hearing to necessitate the use of
hearing aids or of instruction in lip
reading—but they do need watching
and in some cases, removal of ade
noid growths.
Miss Beam said that many parents
do not realize that children who have!
had repeated earaches are often left
with defective hearing.
In cases where parents cannot af
ford the necessary medical care, the
council is prepared to help them. ;
The members of the council feel
that in helping in this work and in
the eye clinic held last fall, they
have contributed substantially to the
program of Preventative Medicine in
the field of Child Health.
Meetings of the Council are held
on the second Tuesday of each I
month.
GOLF AND POLO
(Continued from Page 1)
broke up many an Army offense be
tween them.
Lt. Col. Haugen led the Army team
with two goals and some strong de
fensive play, while Capt. W. N. Jef
fords scored the Army's other goal.
Harry Offutt, Jr., of Phoenix, Ari
zona, won the 43rd Annual North
and South Amateur Championship
on Saturday when he defeated Corp.j
Ronnie Williams of Detroit, Mich.,
who is now stationed at Camp But
ner near Durham, in the 36-hole fin
al match by the close margin of 2
and 1.
Offutt's a worthy successor to
the crown vacated by Pinehurst's own
George T. Dunlap, Jr., who did not
defend his title, and wton many
friends by his steady, consistent
golf all during the tournaments and
his fine sportsmanship. Offutt has
finished in the money in the last
four tournaments he has entered, so
his win was not in any sense an up
set. He was low amateur in the Ma
honing Valley Open in August, won
the Phoenix Country Club Invita
tional in February 1943, the Encanto
Invitationel in Phoenix in April and
completed his sweep in the North
and South.

BASEBALL
j The Southern Pines baseball team
j won its opening game here, Tues
day, April 20, beating West End 7
Ito 6. A five-run surge in the last
inning brought victory. Fowler op-
I I ened with a single! Hodgkins dou
bled; Culler, Pate and Zion walked;
> and with the bases loaded, Delmar
Mann cleared the sacks with a dou
, ble to left, his third hit.
Bill Raymond pitched the whole
| game for Southern Pines, giving up
five hits and no earned runs. With
the aid of his sweeping curve, Ray
mond also fanned nine while issuing
only two walks. Both teams got five
hits, but Southern Pines capitalized
on the wildness of three West End
pitchers. Zion had a perfect day,
getting on base four times through
walks.

On Palm Sunday, Father Hark ins
spoke on Our Lord's Last Days, bas
ing his sermon on St. Matthew 26:11
'Me you have not always." He said,
in part:
"Memory loves to dwell on the de
tails surrounding the death of oui
departed friends. Their farewell
vords and messages are remember
ed and repeated and handed down.
They live again in memory. And
vho deserves such kindly thought
vhose words and every action should
)e treasured up. as devoutly and as
gratefully as His, who for us and
our salvation laid down His life?.He
ieems to appeal V. us not to forge'
Him: 'Me you have not always with
you'."
The pastor described the trium
>hal entry into Jerusalem as the
| rowd went forth to meet Him, wav
j ing palm branches, and the bitter
I ie.:s of the Pharisee's disappoint-
I nent when it seemed that the '
vhole world had gone after Him.
■ Then he discussed the miracle of the
fig tree.
"There was no fruit, and our
Lord cursed the tree, and it withered
uway, the minister said. "This, our
Savior's only miracle of destruction.
! ign.fied the judgment destined for
.he deceitfulness of the people, and
accords with His prediction of the I
destruction of Temple, and His i
calamities that would overtake the I
nation."
j Father Harkins then recounted the |
efforts of Christ's enemies to stir up'
ihe popular fury or the enmity of i
I the Romans, and the greed-prompted I
! offer of Judas Iscariot to betray Him. j
| oncluding with these words:
"Before His passion on the cross,
our Biesesd Lord is shrouded in sac
red silence. And in those hours of
silence, the events of which are hid
den from us, may we not believe
that there was a solemn leave-tak
ing between the Mother and the Son?
Our Lady's heart had to be nerved
and strengthened for the Sacrifice of
Calvary. She had to consent, poor
broken-hearted Mother, to the death
of her Son. She was obedient to the
Will of God even to His DeathliThus
Mary Immaculate shared in the Re
demption of Calvary."
