Southern Pines Country Club Sale (Continued from Page 1) largely on Southern Pines perma nent residents. To exclude them would be stupid business and that is something in which Mr. Sherman has not yet indulged One condition of sale that, it is agreed by all parties, has been fully protected is the provision that no trees on the property shall be cut except to extend the golf course. . . NOT for the pur pose of selling lumber. However, there are some seven ty building lots, plus about 500 acres of golf courses. Those who fear the sale has not been put through with enough air-tight provisions say that there is noth ing to prevent the new purchaser from subdividing lots and golf courses and turning the whole deal into a real estate venture. In which case Southern Pines would be “took” and great profit indeed would pour into the cof fers of the new owner. Say those who favor the sale: Absurd. It was sold as a country and golf club and will remain such. Say those backing the sale: “Keep your shirts on. Nothing has been done except that a de posit has been made and a re ceipt for same given. The sale agreements that are to protect Southern Pines’ interests have not yet been made. But they will be made before the final papers of ownership are granted.” The backers claim that when such agreements are duly made not one out of a hundred people will find anything at all to com plain about. The sale, they claim, is one of the best moves that has been made in Southern Pines in years. It will take out of the hands of amateurs the manage ment of the Southern Pines Coun try Club and place it right where it belongs—in the hands of those who have proven their ability to run a golf club successfully. And then Southern Pines will enjoy the results of a good club run properly. “Not”, hastily add those who say such, “that the Club hasn’t been run as well as it has been possible for those now in charge to run it. They’ve simply not had tl^e backing, nor the power. Now we’ll really see something.” That we are all waiting to see. Good luck to those stepping out. Good luck to those Stepping in. The mystery gift, announced by the Association two weeks ago, was solved this week when word came to J. Talbot Johnson, chair man of the finance committee, that the donor was Mrs. J. L. McKinney, a* former resident of Southern Pines, now living in La Grangeville, N. Y. In announc ing the gift of one thousand doll ars, Johnson said that Mrs. Mc Kinney had always loved the Sandhills where she and her hus band lived for many years.
