Moore County Maternal Welfare
The past two Saturdays have
been tag day in Carthage for the
“Help Save Mothers’ Lives” cam
paign now being actively pressed
by the Moore County Maternal
Welfare Association. This organ
ization is one of the few philan
thropic groups whose friends are
entirely in the section from which
they are solicited. When a person
makes a donation to the Moore
County Maternal Welfare Associ
ation, he can be assured that
every nickel of it will be spent
upon the underprivileged mo
thers and babies of Moore County
regardless of race or color.
Mrs. F. H. Underwood is the
local chairman, under whom the
Girl Scouts observed a success
ful street tag day on a previous
Saturday. Mrs. J. L. McGraw,
soliciting the business and pro
fessional men on Saturday, May
18, reports a very generous re
sponse. Ninety-seven per cent of
those approached, made a dona
tion. This speaks well for the ac
complishments of the Maternal
Welfare Association in the past
years, and should make the lead
ers of the work, which has re
cently been reorganized, take re
newed courage, as the response
to the drive shows that the need
of such work is being understood,
and appreciated.
Since quite a number of the of
fices are sought by two or more
candidates, there will have to be
a decision made as to which is
the better man (or woman, as we
have one woman running). When
you happen to have been good
friends with both of the candi
dates for a lifetime, and your
families and their families have
also been close friends for two
generations, you find yourself
wishing you could cast two votes.
It is the responsibility of the
party to get the better man on
the ticket, but when both mep
seem equally good, there you
are. It is going to take some very
deep thinking or maybe you
could just 'draw straws.
Schools
Moore County will be very
short on school commencements
this year, due to the addition of
the twelfth grade. Aberdeen is
the only county school which will
have a graduating class. This is
because the twelfth grade was
put into the system there by lo
cal tax before the state put it into
all the schools. The graduating
class there will consist of twenty-
two seniors. By going to summer
school, a few students here and
there will have enough credits
to graduate this year. Cameron
will have one graduate, and Car
thage, two. The young ladies
graduating from the high school
here this year are Misses Betty
Baker and Helen Strader.

Heard Around The Drug Store
Politics seems to be getting hot
around Carthage if the talk that
goes on in front of the drug store
these Spring evenings is any in
dication.
That informal forum for free
and unlimited discussion was the
scene this week of not only some
lively discussion but also some
interesting bet placing. Even
money and odds of two to one
were offered, and the money de
posited with stake holders by cer
tain gentlemen who are very sure
of their favorite candidate’s abil
ity to poll votes in the coming
Democratic Primary.

Moore County Classroom
Teachers Organize
The initial meeting of the
Moore County Classroom Teach
ers was held in the Carthage
High School auditorium ‘ on
Thursday, May 16, with a very
encouraging attendance. This is
a division of the N. C. E. A., and
is generally known as the fight
ing arm of the Association that
works for better conditions for
the classroom teachers. It is the
teachers’ trade union, so to speak.
Miss Ellen Jones of Catneron,
the newly elected president, pre
sided over the business session,
which was largely given over to
hearing the views of the various
political candidates in regard to
their proposed school programs.
Mrs. Cone McPherson of Cam
eron, chairman of the legislative
committee, had secured from each
candidate to Congress, and to the
State Legislature, a statement of
just what his stand for schools
is. These were read at the meet
ing, and they stressed such pro
gressive measures as increased
retirement for teachers, more vo
cational subjects taught, better
pay for teachers, improved sec
ondary roads, and higher pay for
the bus drivers.
- The consensus of opinion
among the teachers during the
off-the-record discussions of the
social hour which followed the
business session, was that all
the candidates had splendid pro
grams, provided they could put
them across, if an when elected.
Senator Wilbur H. Currie was
mentioned by the legislative
chairman for his past commend
able record in the legislature on
behalf of the teachers and educa
tion.
Miss Donaldson of West End,
chairman of membership, report
ed seventy-two members, with
two schools, Farm Life and Vass-
Lakeview, being 100 percent en
rolled.
Miss Blanche Monroe of West
End was named chairman of pub
licity, Miss Meade Seawell, chair
man of programs for the next
school year, and Mrs. W. O. Poe,
chairman of the social committee.
The subjects most discussed
during the meeting by the teach
ers themselves were a better re
tirement system for teachers, and
the continuing contract.
