Bends Steel Bar, Steals Cash Box j Aberdeen Highway
Silently Steals Away In New Suit Being Extended
The Valet Shop in Southern
Pines was robbed last Friday
night by some bar-bender who
has left in his or her wake . . .
nothing. But he or she has taken
with him or her one fat cash box
containing $150 of Valet money
and one fine suit belonging to
Vass cotton mill owner A. M.
Cameron.
Chief Newton has covered the
scene with a fine-tooth comb in
hopes of finding some leading
clue, but as yet reports no suc
cess. The Chief bemoaned the fact
that there was so much dust about
that' no finger print was able to
play the hero role and point out
the culprit.
The fact that the thief acquired
a good suit has aroused consider
able jealousy among the ex-GI’s
who visit store after store in fu
tile hunt of garments proper for
removing the taint of khaki from
one’s soul.
It has even been suggested that
if the thief finds the suit does
not fit he hang same on the near
est veterans’ organization.

League of Women
Voters Organize
At a meeting held in the Com
munity Center at Southern Pines
on May 17th, it was agreed to
proceed with plans for organiz
ing a branch of the League of
Women Voters, and to hold an
organization meeting, at the same
place, on Tuesday, May 28th, to
which all women in the Sandhills
are invited. At this meeting, there
will be a Forum Discussion on
“Our Tax Dollar, and How it is
spent”.
The object of this organization
is that women may become better
informed as to the working of
our democratic government, and
may better understand how to
co-operate with the representat
ives for whom we vote.
When the highway was block
ed off between Southern Pine?
and Aberdeen last week, great
was the speculation as to jus',
how long it was going to stc3'
blocked off. Some very interest
ed Service Station oprr.ators fear
ed a several month detour from
their cash registers.
hTe straight and sir"-le fact
is that it will be reopened very i
soon now ... at the latest, by ]
June 1, with king weather per- j
mitting. “Be sure you add that i
about the weather” said the Dick
erson & Co representative. Dick
erson & Company are from Mon
roe, N. C. and are using two very
upto-date “Pans” on the job.
These “Pans” scoop up twelve
cubic yards of earth at a clip,
with a powerful bulldozer adding
its might to the pan’s stern when
the going gets tough.
The highway broadening job
will extend from the Pureoil Sta
tion, about two miles out, to the
railroad overpass.
