Monroe, candidate for the office of Register of Deeds, replies in the following open let ter to what he considers an un favorable statement made by Southern Pines Citizens against him: Messrs. C. N. Page; A. S. Bug gies; W. E. Blue; Charles S. Patch W. H. McNeill; J. W. Atkinson; D. G. Stutz and George G. Herr. Gentlemen: I do not know any of you per sonally, but your statement in the Southern Pines Pilot advocating the re-nomination of Miss Bessie McCaskill for Register of Deeds is somewhat unusual in Moore County politics and evidences that you are alarmed because a returned veteran is asking for election to one of the good paying jobs at the Courthouse, and have taken this method to frighten Service in the armed forces alone does not qualify one for office and inasmuch as your state ment questions my ability to hold the office of Register, allow me to say the following about myself: I am a native born citizen of Moore County, 25 years old, mar ried with one child. I graduated from Pinehurst High School Bus iness Department and worked in Pinehurst General Office until I joined the armed forces in 1942. While in the Navy I was in charge of service and payrool rec ords for my squadron, where my service record on this exacting job speaks for itself. I am familiar with the duties of the Register’s Office and feel confident I can fill them. I believe jthat Messrs. Blue, Patch, Atkinson, Page and Stutz had sons or daughters in World War II, and would resent the im plication that their military ser those who otherwise would vote vice should disqualify them for for me. Permit me to defend my self and advance my cause against you and all others who would conspire to defeat the ambitions of any veteran desiring to take a part in the government, that we have so recently been called upon to defend. VOTE FOR James E. Nonroe for Register of Deeds A World War II Veteran Who Possesses Eminent Quali fications For The Office to Which He Aspires Submarine Service QUALIFIED For the Job Before being assigned to the submarine service, Mr. Monroe served as clerk yeoman in charge of service records and payrolls for his squadron at the Norfolk Navy Yard, a position of trust, as every soldier and sailor can testify, and one that requires clerical skill and experience. In addition, he has been em ployed for years in the General Office at Pinehurst, where his duties have given him an unusual familiarity with busi ness and records. A graduate of Pinehurst High School, Mr. Monroe specialized in bookkeeping, typing and allied commercial subjects—all of which will help him greatly in the efficient conduct of your office of Register of Deeds, if nomi nated and elected. This Is Your Chance To Show Your Appreciation To A Veteran of World War II Hundreds of Moore County citizens have made the statement —“Where all things are equal, I will vote for the ex-service man.” Well, here’s your chance. James Earl Monroe is not only a veteran of World War II, but he is qualified by train ing and experience for the job of Register .of Deeds.. VOTE FOR JANES E. MONROE for Register of Deeds This Advertisement Sponsored by Friends of James E. Monroe public or private position, if they were otherwise trained for the job. So would any parent or rela tive. It would not matter so much to me if I were dereated, because of-my inability to contact every voter, or was unable to hire au tomobiles or poll workers to bring in the voters, but it would hurt me and also the spirit of every returned veteran, if I were discriminated against, because for the last three years I had been tant now as it was during the ac tual hostilities. The writer has felt for some time that if the people of the county really xmderstood the need and the importance of the work that they would be only too glad to offer their services and take an active part. The chapter office is open daily from nine a. m. to five p. m. ex cept Saturday. It closes at noon and is closed all day Sunday. However, there is always some one available in case of emer gency and the telephone and tele graph offices know where to con tact them. The time has now arrived when volunteer workers should register at the office of the chap ter, let us know what branch of work they would prefer doing, what days they would be avail able, the number of hours they could give and where they could be reached. If all volunteers would do this our chapter could lead the state and nation in ef ficiency . This matter of volunteer work ers is squarely up to the member ship of the Red Cross and it this their careful consideration is sin cerely hoped by us all that the people of the county give and take the necessary steps to so arrange their affairs so that they can give some of themselves to this critical and humanitarian work. Much of our present work is helping ex-servicemen and their families and these men made far greater sacrifices for us than we will ever be called upon to make for them. Think it over! GRACE IRENE McDONALD RECEIVES DISCHARGE Another Wave is out of uni form. Wave Grace Iren McDonald, Sic, received her discharge from active duty May 15th at the U. S. Naval Personnel Separation Cen ter, U. S. Naval Barracks, Wash ington, D. C. Miss McDonald ent ered active duty on the 16th of November, 1944 and was reported last on duty at the Personnel Sep aration Center, Norfolk, Va. Miss McDonald’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Daniel T. McDonald of Jackson Springs, N. C. in the service of my country, in stead of shaking hands with vot ers and making friends with po litical leaders. It appears that Moore County has done well by the present Reg ister. For nearly 20 years she was Deputy-Register. Then defeated her former employer, who was a veteran with family, for his job, and has been re-elected for three terms without opposition. I un derstand she is in good financial circumstances and does not need this job. If nominated, I would be glad to have her continue as Deputy-Register at a fair salary, if she wanted to do so. The Southern Pines, Aberdeen and Pinehurst Communities pay nearly 3-5ths of Moore County taxes, also furnish about 3-5ths of business for Register’s office. Without prejudice to any other community, it would seem that this end of the County should have one of the four main offices in the Courthouse. In the light of your previous endorsements I do not ask that you support me, but would ask that you do not use your influ ence against me with the many mothers and fathers who would otherwise give me their vote. Ov er 2,000 went from Moore Coun ty into the armed forces, many never returned. I believe that each of these would appreciate a vote for a veteran as symbolic of good wishes for those who did return. Yours sincerely, James E. Monroe (political advertisement) Red Cross Seeks Volunteer Workers By Col. Geo. P. Hawes. Jr. (Chm'n Moore Co. Red Cross) The Moore County Chapter of the Red Cross belongs to the peo ple of the county. The chapter is run by the people. Many of us whose homes are in the county are members of the Red Cross but we have done little for it other than make a contri bution yearly. If our chapter is to continue successful it is nec essary that each of us give some of ourselves to help one who is less fortunate. Only about two percent of those who work for the Red Cross receive any pay, the other ninety-eight percent are volun teers. That is the set up of the Red Cross. We of Moore County are a little different from most chapters in that we have many resort and winter resident^. These winter residents have been so helpful both financially and as volunteer workers that we residents of the county have drifted into the bad habit of sitting back and letting them do the work. That is fine in one way, for they have the time and love to work, but when summer comes the chapter has to be practically reorganized. The winter residents leave and the work remains, and that causes a great hardship on the few peo ple who work for the Red Cross the year round. The work seems always to be with us and it is just as impor- H. CLIFTON BLUE FOR House of Representatives TO THE DEMOCRATIC VOTERS OF MOORE COUNTY; When I announced my candidacy for the State House of Representatives a few weks ago, I said, in part: “I believe I can be of service to my country and state in the Legislature, and I purpose to try in a friendly way to win the nomination and election, and if the people think favorably of my candidacy I shall appreciate their support. If the people think differently, it shall be their right to decide the matter and I shall not take to the bushes in disappointment.” This statement still stands. I know the people of Moore County and I feel that the peo ple know me pretty well. If you feel that I am the proper person to represent your county in the 1947 session of the General Assembly, j[ shall certainly appreciate your support. If I am nominated and elected I shall strive to measure up to the expec tations of my friends and supporters and to represent the entire county to the best of my knowledge and ability. As I have said before, if nominated and elected, as it now appears that I will be, judging from reports from all sections of the county, I want you to feel free to advise me of your senti ments concerning any and all legislation which may come be fore the next General Assembly in which you are interested. Sincerely, Don’t Forget to Vote Saturday Remember the Polls Close at 6:30 p. m.—Vote Early!
