Many patrons were present for the opening ex ercises, which were conducted by P. A. Wilson. J. H. Bunn, prin cipal, presented the only new teacher, Mi|ss iAlberta Monroe, who, after all, is not new as she has taught in Vass a number of years, two of which she served as principal, and is back after an absence of only one year. For a short while the school wijl operate on a short schedule, beginning at 8:15 a. m. and clos ing at 12:45, in order that the boys and girls may help with the farm work. I Another Trip Across A Mac Cameron left last week for Newport News, Va., and on Sunday sailed for Poland on a relief ship carrying horses. This is his second trip across this sum mer as a volunteer worker in a relief program being carried on under UNRRA. Celebrates Birthday Roddy Fields was eleven years old last Sunday and an occasion of such greait importance just had to be celebrated in some way, so Roddy’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Fields, arranged a splendid way—a birthday dinner. Guests were Harolc^ McNeill of Southern Pines, Bill and Philip Wood, Clyde Cox, Jr., and Jimmy Lee Gilmore. Woman's Club The Vass Woman’s Club will meet at the home of Mrs. H. C. Callahan on Thursday (not Fri day) night of next week, Septem ber 12, at 7:45. Methodist Society The Woman’s Society of Christ ian Service of the Methodist Church will meet with Mrs. S. R. Smith at 7:30 Wednesday night, September 11. Service Hour Changes With next Sunday night’s ser vice at the Methodist Church the hour is being changed from 8 to 7:30. The public is cordially in vited to be present at this ser vice, which will be featured by music by the young people and children. Memorial Service Cypress Presbyterian Church has obtained a plaque in memory of two of its members who lost their lives in the recent war, Francis McGill, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arch McGill, and Marvin Johnson, son of the late Lula Johnson. A brief memorial ser vice will be held next Sunday morning, September 8, at 11 o’clock. Personals Mr. and Mrs. G. M. McDermott, George and Hugh McDermott, and their guest. Miss Barbara Holland of Ada, Okla., went to Manteo Sunday to see “The Lost Colony” and returned Monday. Mrs. T. F. Cameron and Miss Anna Edgerton visited their sis ter, Mrs. Bright Andrews of Chapel Hill, during last weekend. Their niece, Anna Edgerton, re turned to her home in Littleton last week after a visit of several days in the Cameron home. Mrs. R. L. King of Lakeview returned on Thursday of last week from Richmond, Va., where she had been visiting her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Muncie King. The latter was quite ill while Mrs. King was there, but was showing some im provement. The Rev. and Mrs. J. Mayer and children, Brenda and Jackie, of Columbia, S. C., spent Tuesday night with Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Wilson. Mrs. Mayer is Mr. Wil son’s sister. Mrs. John Byrd, who is im proving following a recent illness, had the pleasure of seeing her son, J. E. Byrd, Sunday for the first tiine in about three years. Mr. Byrd returned from overseas a few weeks ago and he and his wife and children came down from High Point to see his mo ther and Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Craig. Mr. and Mrs. Tonuny Gsch- wind of Aberdeen visited Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gschwind Mon day. Mrs. W. J. Cameron Spent Mon day and Tuesday with Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Cameron in Manly. Other guests in the Cameron home were Mrs. John B. Cam eron and little daughter, Linda Sue, of Winston-Salem and Mrs. David Gillis and children of Mount Olive. Mrs. G. E. Griffin spent Thurs day night and Friday of last week in Lee County Hospital and was out of her office the first of this week recovering from her illness. Visitors in the Griffin home Mon day afternoon were her sister, Mrs. R. E. King of Raleigh, Mr. King and the children. Miss Irma Ruth Graham re turned to Elon Tuesday to re sume her studies at Elon College. Mrs. G. W. Griffin has gone to GuBport, Miss., to visit rela tives. Colin Callahan of High Point spent Friday night with his bro ther, H. C. Callahan, and family. Mrs. W. H. Keith and Linwood Keith returned on Monday from a trip to Norfolk, Va., and Man teo, where they saw “The Lost Colony” Sunday. Mrs. A. Gi Edwards went to Raleigh Monday to see her mo-' ther, Mrs. J. S. Bundy, who has been ill for some time. J. A. Chappell of Asheboro vis ited his mother, Mrs. Annie Chappell, last weekend. Mrs. Relmond McCraney and children. Bill, Kent and Kathryn, of Lackey, Va., Visited Mrs. W. D. McCraney and Mrs. D. H. Mc Gill from Thursday until Mon day. Mr. McCraney joined them for the weekend. Irvin Campbell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claud Campbell, returned from overseas last week and re ceived his discharge at Fort Bragg. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gsch- wihd spent the weekend with rel- ativesin Mullins, S. C., going down to take their nieces, Bar bara and Rosemady Stanton, home. Miss Patricia Fields and Miss Nova Fields of Pleasant Garden left Thursday after visiting in the home of Mr. and' Mrs. R. H. Fields.. Mrs. A. L. Keith and son, Philip Andrew, came home from Lee County Hospital last Friday, and Mrs. ,R. E. Patterson, who had been with Mr. and Mrs. Keith for several weeks, has gone back to her home in Manly. The Rev. Robert Gardner? Emory Matthews, and Mrs. J. M. Tyson were supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. King at Lakeview Tuesday. Dr. Collins Speaks In Carthage At Farm Bureau Meet Monday night September 2 there was a mass meeting of farmers in the Court Room. The purpose of the meeting was to get the latest information on pro duction of small grain and at the same time make plans for start ing our Farm Bureau Campaign. Dr. R. Collins, Extension Agronomist from State College was the principal speaker. Dr. Collins has done excellent work on the production of com thro- ughtout, particularly Hybrids. A small grain program is now being started all over the State. With the food and feed situation as it is now, it is felt to be up to everyone to make each acre count for the most. This meeting and the information which Dr. Collins has will be available to all farm ers of Moore County and all are urged to attend.' Dr. Collins illustrated his talk with a series of pictures showing different varieties; meth ods of fertilization, etc. There were many farmers of the Coun ty who attended and brought friends with them to hear the in structive and helpful information presented by Dr. Collins. Poole and daughter Blondell and Misses Doris Jean and Betty Grace Gad dy spent last week at Carolina Beach. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. John Walden of Greensboro. Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Parsons were vacationing in the moim- tains of Virginia last week. Mrs. Jennie Teeter and daugh ters Betty and Peggy and son Billy were weekend guests of rel atives in Rock Hill, S. C. Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Henderson, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Fields and daughter Dianne spent last week end with Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Purvis in Robersonville. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Carter and daughter Barbara and Mr. A. Q. Carter spent the weekend in King’s Mountain with Mr. and Mrs. Earl Morris. We are glad to report Harris Blake much improved from a head injury suffered in a wreck on last Friday evening. He re turned home from Moore County Hospital on Wednesday. The Rev. R. R. Ramsey went to Richmond, Va., Monday to perform the marriage ceremony of his niece. Mr. and Mrs. James Snipes and daughter of High Point visited with Mrs. Snipes’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. D. Reece Sunday. Misses Maxine Cole and Helen Melvin have returned to their honiies from Samarcand where they were employed through the summer months.
