Mirth melody and madness
form the piquant ingredients for
Samuel Goldsmiths new Techni
color comedy extraveganze with
music, ‘The Kid From Brooklyn”,
starring Danny Kaye in the role
of a milkman who turns pugilist
and wins the world’s champion
ship. Coming to the Carolina
Theatre, Southern Pines, Sun
day, Monday and Tuesday, Sept.
8-9-10 at 8:15, with a Tuesday
matinee at 3:00, the cast includes
Virginia Mayo, Vera-Ellen and
the Goldwyn Girls who take care
of the glamour and melody with
several tuneful numbers, while
others in the big cast include
Walter Abel, Eve Arden, Steve
Cochran, Fay Bainter and Lionel
Stander.
Samuel Goldwyn has rung the
bell again—but good this time,
with a whiz of a show of the
wholly escapist, entirely eye
filling and completely satisfying-
to - the - appetite - for - laughs
variety.
On coming Tom Drake’s popu
larity (with “Green Years” and
“Courage Of Lassie.”) with pa
trons is pleasantly furthered by
the comedy-drama, “Faithful In
My Fashion,” coming to the Car
olina Theatre, Southern Pines,
Wednesday and Thursday, Sept.
11-12 at 8:15 p. m. in which
Drake portrays a ;;eturning vet
eran faced with the fact that his
sweetheart has arranged her ro
mantic plannings during his ab
sence without letting him know.
Drake’s leading lady is Donna
Reed, and the large cast consists
of Edward Everett Horton,
Spring Byington, Sig Ruman,
Harry Davenport, Bill Phillips,
Margaret Hamilton, Hobert Cav
anaugh, Warner Anderson, Con
nie Gilchrist and Jack Overman.
The dramatic and moving story
of how a Texas cattleman found
a way into the hearts of wayward
boys inspired the well-knovfrn
screen writer William Ludwig
with an idea for one of his most
absorbing and realistic motion
picture scripts. The story is un
folded in “Boy’s Ranch,” featur
ing Jackie “Butch” Jenkins,
James Craig and Skippy Hom-
eier, and coming to the Carolina
Theatre, Southern Pines,- Friday
and Saturday, Sept. 13-14, at 8:15
p. m. with a Saturday matinee
at 3:00.
The picture reunites young
Jenkins and Craig, last seen to
gether in “Our Vines Have Ten
der Grapes.” Little “Butch” en
acts an orphan brought up by a
grandfather wjithout jplaymates
of his own age and consequently
acting like a little “old Man.”
Craig has the part of Dan Walk
er, the cattleman whose goal is
to found a home for underpriv
ileged youngsters.
The story, inspired, by the fa
mous refuge for homeless boys
near Amarillo, Texas, foundied
by Cal Farley, centers on the
attempt of a Texan and his
neighbors to give a fresh start in
life to juvenile delinquents who
have been handicapped by pov
erty and the wrong environment.
Sunrise
The right way to become ac
quainted with a strange girl on
the street *is demonstrated by
Franchot Tone in Universal’s
“Because of Him.”
It works—almost!—on Deanna
Durbin. Tone at least learns her
telephone number in the gay new
film which comes Tuesday to the
Sunrise Theatre.
“Nearly every man,” asserted
the actor, “has sometime in his
life seen a pretty girl on the
street he would like to meet.
“But there’s practically noth
ing the average guy can do about
it, because it’s not the custom to
force an acquaintance with a
strange woman.”
Tone, who has played numer
ous screen wolves, scorns in “Be
cause of Him” to use any simple
method like tipping the hat and
smiling.
Instead, he tries the irate citi
zen technique. He seizes Dean
na’s arm as she is about to cross
the intersection, and scolds her
for going against the traffic light.
For screen purposes, anyway,
explains Tone, the angry stuff
works better than the smile.
But in real life?. . . “Well, add
ed the actor, “Every man is on
his own.”

SIX-MAN FOOTBALL
(Continued from Page 1)
Practice is held at 3:30 each
afternoon at the Ball Park and
the public is invited to watch
the football that promises great
things for schools where eleven
man football puts too big a
strain on the school manpower
to enable scrub teams to give
the first team decent scrim
mages. One spectator at a six-
man football game is reported
to have watched three games be
fore he realized the teams on
the field were not eleven men
teams.
New jerseys are now on hand
for the team, but new pants, al
though ordered, have not been
delivered. There is sufficient
equipment for the entire squad,
but the football shoe situation
is the worst situation at present.
The squad this week is taking
things easy with passing, kick
ing, and setting up exercises.
Next week, however, coaches
Dawson and Weaver report the
squad will get down to serious
business.
YOUNG JERRY LENTZ
(Continued from Page 1)
dog did not attempt to bite her
and that she was not sure the
dog was “mad.”
'The police searched for the
dog but could not; track it down.
Mrs. Bion and Miss Helen But
ler are reported to have seen a
dog answering the description
shortly after the incident and
saw blood on the dog’s white
coat.
Later, it was also reported that
a dog answering to similar des
cription was slain out by the
Sanitarium past Aberdeen.
