The Carolinas Something different in melo dramas is "‘Angel On My Shoul der,” starring Paul Muni, Anne Baxter and Claude Rains, com ing to the Pinehurst Theatre Sunday night, October 13th, at 8:30. Cleverly written, acted and di rected, it emerges as a solid piece of entertainment, which treats of the devil and hell with a fine hu morous touch. It is a timely political satire with the story advancing a new twist on the spirit-returns-to- earth theme by bringing the devil and one of his customers back to earth to dispose of what ever good government still re mains. In this satirical vein it works its way through some ex tremely funny situations and a little love-making of the devil’s kind, all planned for laughs that come thick and fast. dren, and allows the corpses to stay off-stage. ( Campaigning for entertainment ballots on a platform of love, lau ghter and song, 20th. Century- Fox’s newest musical hit, “If I’m Lucky,” starring Vivian Blaine, Parry Como, Carmen Miranda and Harry James and his Orches tra, opens its local campaign at the Carolina Theatre, Southern Pines, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 18-19, at 8:15 p. m. with a Satur day matinee at 3:00. And based on early returns from preview precincts, the merry and melodious story of a cute lottle trooper, a shy and modest crooner and an ambitiovis guy with a hot trumpet who find themselves all mixed-up in poli tics—and love, is well on its way towards achieving an entertain ment landslide from coast to coast. Sunrise Metro - Goldwy^-Mayer’s top notch technicolor musical, “Holi day In Mexico” starring Walter Pigeon, Ilona Massey, Jane Pow ell, Rody McDowell with Jose Iturbi and Xavier Cugat and his Orchestra, returns to the Sand hills, at the Carolina Theatre, Southern Pines, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 13-14-15, at 8:15 p. m. with a Tuesday mati nee at 3:00. As exceptionally fine enter tainment, the picture sets a high mark for others to shoot at. In addition to such proven popular music-makers as Jose Iturbi, Cu gat and orchestra and Ilona Mas sey, the picture introduces the screen’s newest and youngest songbird, 15-year-old Jane Pow ell, an extremely talented adol escent, both as concerns her thes- pic abilities and her golden pipes. Mirthful, melodious and mig- nificent is “Holiday In Mexico.” Those who believe that all who-dunits stem from the same formula are due for a consider able and pleasant surprise when they see the refreshingly differ ent approach to the business of producing mysteries, in “Home Sweet Homicide” the attraction at the Carolina Theatre, South ern Pines, Wednesday and Thurs day, Oct. 16-17, at 8:15 p. m. with a Thursday matinee at 3:00. With a large cast, headed by Peggy Ann Garner, Randolph Scott, James Gleason, Lynn Bari, Dean Stockwell, Connie Marshall and Anabel Shaw, there’s more merriment tthan murder in Louis D. Lighton’s production of a Craig Rice mystery novel, it con cerns itself with the on-stage an tics of a trio of charming chil- The talent that first brought Van Johnson to Hollywood, namely his singing and dancing, is finally revealed on the screen in the new M-p-M technicolor musical, “Easy to Wed”, playing Sunday and Monday at the Sun rise Theatre with Van Johnson, Esther Williams, Lucille Ball and Keenan Wynn headlining a stel lar cast. Van sings and dances in two numbers with Miss Williams, who also makes her singing and dancing debut. Not to be outdone, Lucille Ball has a number of her own, “The Continental Polka.” Johnson’s discovery by Holly wood talent scouts occurred in 1941 while he was appearing in the Broadway musical hit, “Pal Joey,” which also sent Gene Kelly and June Havoc to motion pictures. In all. Van appeared in five musical shows on the stage, starting in the chorus line in 1937. The new picture marks the re union of two hit teams, Johnson and Miss Williams having scored together previously in "‘Thrill of a Romance,” with Miss Ball and Wynn remembered for their com edy teaming in “Without Love.” Others in the cast of “Easy to Wed” are Cecil Kellaway, Carlos Ramirez and Ben Blue, under the direction of Edward Buzzell.
