Page Six ' THE PILOT, Southern Pines. North Carolina Friday, November 22, 1946. Draum hj George Brebm for the Hmdred Neediest Cases and loaned so the Cood Hedtb Astodasion by the New York TUtneSo Our North Carolina Farm People must have more hospitals and doctors ^TlHREE-roCRlHS of our people in Notdi ^ CuolVA live in rural areas; and yet 34 of out rnnt conodes do not have one hospital bed.... Bfiiqr of our farm people die needlessly every year because diey cannot get into a hospital... Of ifae 8,000 odd hospital beds in Nordi Can>^ 42% ate in 6 large urban counties. A sick person in 40 other states has a better dhsnoe of getting into a hospital qmckly than he lus in North Cacolkta. Health centers, scientifically equipped and Cscpet^ manned would prolong the lives of huo> dreda of our form people. OUR No. 1 NEED THE GOOD HEALTH PLAN As Approved by the State’s Medical Care Commission 1. A Hospital or Health Center in every county! Total cost; <48,000,000 over 5 years. One-third paid by Federal Government, two-thirds by State and Local Gov ernments. Poorest counties may pay as little as 17%. Approximately <43,000,000 is to provide: 3,000 beds in new or existing Hospitals and Health Centers, 1,300 beds for Mental Hospitals, and 700 beds for T. B. Hospitals.... 7,200 new beds in dl. Approximately <3,000,000 is lot the State’s Teaching Hos pital with 400 beds available to all citizens of the State. 2. <500,000 a year to provide $1 a day for indigent patients in hospitals. 5. Medical-education loans to encourage young Nordi Carolinians m become doctors and to practice in rural communities. 4. Mote doctors, more nurses, and mdie medical techni cians by expanding the State’s 2-year Medical Sdiool to a snuidard 4-year school (Cost included in the Teaching Ho^utal item listed in Section 1.) 5. Adequate ptovisum for educating more NeglO doc- tots. 6. State-wide campaign for mote "Blue Cram" noo- profit hospital insurance; We need "Rural Doaots" too! Back in 1914—in the horse-and-buggy days—1,125 doc tors pracdced in the rural sections of our State. Today, with almost twice as many people in North Carolina, we have only 719 "Country Doc tors.” in the rural areas one doctor is called upon to take cate ctf 3,600 people.... Ami most of our rural general practitioners should be decorated for meritorious service to their fellow-man. But they are too few and too far between. Our form people must have mote doctors who live near to them. Many of them die needlessly because the doctor is miles—and hours away! GOOD HEALTH SPONSORED BY Sandhill Drug Co.
