Candlelighiing Service Rehearsals were started Mon day night for a Christmas can dielighting service, “The Light of Bethlehem,” to be presented in the Vass Methodist Church at 7:30 o’clock on the fourth Sun day evening, December 22. The young people’s department of the Sunday School and a number of adults will take part in the ser vice. An offering will be made for the Methodist Orphans’ Home in Raleigh. Recovering Kenneth Womack, who wa; the victim of a deer hunting ac cident, is getting along' nicely following the removal of a buck shot from his head and another from a leg. In New Home Miss Blanche Sturdivant and Sgt. and Mrs. Willingham have moved from Star to Vass and are now located in the new bun galow on Highway 1 which Mr. Futrell of Futrell Lumber Com pany recently had built. Ser geant Willingham is stationed at Fort Bragg. School Receives Gift Vass-Lakeview School now has a fine new microphone and stand to use with its moving picture machine and speaker. The mi crophone is a gift from A. M. Cameron. W. E. Gladstone has already tried it out and it works most satisfactorily.' Second Son Mr. and Mrs. Clary Thompson are receiving congratulations upon the birth of their second son, whom they have named Richard Gregory. The baby, a 10-pounder, was born December 5 in a Win ston-Salem hospital. Mr. Thomp son and the older son, Steve, came home from Winston-Salem this week. HOG Killing Time It’s hog killing time again and some of the smokehouses here abouts are being filled. Three hogs that weighed over 500 pounds each have been killed in the cot ton mill village within the past few days. The owners are Char lie Brewer, Ed Callahan and Char lie Scarboro. her home in Albemarle Sunday after spending some time here because of the illness and death of her mother, Mrs. J. A. Keith. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Cameron and Joe Cameron of Manly visit ed Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Smith Sun day afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Keith apd son. Tommy Joe, of Fort Bragg were Sunday afternoon callers in the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. L Keith. Mr. and Mrs. -Odell Cagle (Jes sie Mae Barnhardt) and little son, Odell, of Sanford visited their aunt, Mrs. Bertie L. Mat thews, Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. N. V. Keith and daughter, Nancy Carolyn, of Sanford, Misses Shirley and Jac queline Hicks of Raleigh and Garner, Royster Baker of Willow Springs, and Haywood Kelly of Clayton were Sunday evening dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Griffin. Mrs. J. D. Thompson, Mrs. Arch ’Thompson and Mrs. Pleas ants, of Aberdeen, spent Sunday afternoon calling on friends and relatives in the Cranes Creek section. They visited Miss Eva Graham, who recently returned from Mercy Hospital in Char lotte, and her sister. Miss Kate Graham, also Misses Sallie and Bessie Cameron and Mr. and ]y(rs. A. L. Keith. Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Rollins of Pinebluff had dinner with Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Hendrick Sun day. Mrs. W. H. Keith was a week end guest in the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and N. V. Keith, of Sanford. Initiation We visited the Vass-Lakeview School Monday morning in con nection with the seal sale, and were invited into the agriculture class room, where W. E. Glad stone and a group of his boysj were holding a study period. “You ninth graders stand up,” the teacher commanded. We gaz ed in astonishment. Tall boys, short boys and in-between boys stood, and a queer looking bunch they Were. There was J. D.J ohn son with his shirt and coat on back part in front, and with a big red patch on the opposite side of his anatomy from where patches usually are. Across his shoulder 'was a flour sack which he said contained potatoes. “Do you carry them with you every where you go?” we asked. “I guess I have to,” he replied. Oth ers of the group were dressed in similar fashion. They were: Roy Reynolds, Walter Rambeaut, Ransdell, Leighton Bailey and Richard Womack, Durwood Lonnie Priest. Mr. Gladstone explained that these “Green Hands” were being initiated, receiving the “first de gree”. At the next step they wiU. become “Future Farmers,” then “Carolina Farmers”, and the fourth degree ushers them into the exclusive “American Farm ers”. Vass-Lakeview FF boys always make a fine showing when comp eting with groups from their schools. At Carthage Tuesday in district seed judging competition, a team composed of Robert Bail ey, Bobby Klingenschmidt and Wayland Thomas placed second, and the school won fifth place among all the schools represented. Personals Mrs. P. B. Irby and daughter, Susan, returned early this week from Raleigh, where they had been visiting relatives , since Thanksgiving. Captain Irby, who was with them there for a few days, went back to Atlanta from Raleigh. John McDermott of State Col lege, Raleigh, visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. M. McDermott, during the weekend. Arthur Lee Humphries came home with him and visited here and at Southern Pines. Warren Cox, who drives a Childress truck out from San- fordj spent last week *t home. Miss Phyllis Hayes of Sanford was the weekend guest of Miss Ann Fields. Miss Margaret Lambert of Richmond, Va., came home Sun-j day night to be with her mother, Mrs. W. B. Lambert, who was injured in an automobile acci dent Thursday and is a patient at Moore County Hospital. Mrs. W. C. Byrd returned to Jackson Springs Christmas Party The Business Woman’s circle met last week at the Community hall for their joy gift program and Christmas party. Mrs. Her bert Carter, chairman, presided, with Mrs. Robert Henderson, recording the minutes. Mrs. W. M. Thompson was in charge of the program on peace, concluding with the reception of joy gifts by candle light. Mrs. Elmer Blue was in charge of re freshments whioh were (dainty sandwiches shaped like Christ mas trees and stars,' popcorn balls,nuts and drinks. Gifts were exchanged by the 16 members. About 20 per cent of the world’s wheat and 58 per cent of the corn is supplied by the United States.
