Sunday at his home fol lowing a stroke which he suf fered a few hours earlier, were held Monday at 3 p. m. at the Vass Baptist Church with a large number of relatives and friends present. The pastor, the Rev. Robert A. Gardner of Jonesboro, was assisted in the service by the Rev. W. S. Golden, Presby terian minister of Carthage, and the choir was composed of friends from various churches in Vass. Burial was in Johnson’s Grove Cemetery. Mr. Evans was born in Page- land, S. C. on July 4, 1874 and was married to Miss Lydia Ann Tyson of Union County in 1893. They resided in Union County until 1913, when they came to Moore County, wheie they en gaged in farming with splendid success; To them were born six sons and four daughters, all of whom have settled in Moors County, taking active parts in the community life. Mr. Evans had been a member of the Vass Bap tist Church since 1913. He and Mrs. Evans celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1943. Surviving are his wife and ten children; J. F. Evans of Carth age; R. A. and W. F. Evans of the home, S. H., C. H. and T. C. Evans, all of Vass, Mrs. C. B. Blue, Mrs. Alton Blue and Mrs. Tom Bailey, all of Carthage Route 3, and Mrs. Herman Thomas of Vass; two brothers, G. F. Evans of Pageland, S. C., and P. H. Evans of Columbia, S. C.; two sisters, Mrs. J. D. Adcock of Marshville and Mrs. Lynn Roberson of Pageland, S. C.; 22 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Pall bearers were Raymond Thomas, A. V. Autrey, Henry Parker, J. M. Watson of Southern Pines, is serving aboard the seaplane tender USS Pine Island, one of the 13 ships which comprise Task Force 68, the Navy’s Antarctic expidition. This expeditio, balled “Op eration Highjump,’’ will explore the vast icy regions of the Ant arctic for approximately four months, training personel, test ing equiprnent, and developing Navy technique for establishing and maintaining bases in frigid areas. The Pine Island is carrying two helicopters, three patrol bombers, and one seaplane to be used for aerial photography, map making, and obserV^ion work in the Antarctic.
