North Carolina Friday, March 10. 1950 125,000 of ABC Profits Is Added To County Till Garden Club’s Flower Exhibit Shows Paintings, Samplers, Spring Blooms A check for $25,000, Moore county’s current share of profits from the two county ABC stores, was remitted to the county com missioners at Carthage Itonday by M. G. McRae, of Southern Pines, ABC Board manager. Along with this amount, to be added to the county treasury, Mr. McRae gave a report on activities for the first half of the current fiscal year, ,July 1-December 31, 1949. During that time, he said, the county received $100,000 as its share of profits on total sales of $600,958.10. The Federal government receiv ed approximately $204,000 of this amount, he revealed, while to the State Department of Revenue went the sum of $51,081.43. Total amount remitted to the Moore County treasurer by the ABC board since its inauguration 12 years ago has been $1,288,500, which has gone into the general fund to be expended for county wide benefits. M!r. McRae also reported' on ac tivities of the county’s ABC law' enforcement officers, whose sal aries and expenses are paid from ABC store profits. During the July-December period Officers C. A. McCallum and C., C. MIcGee made 66 arrests, seized^? and one- half gallons of whiskey, and des troyed six stills and 2,425 gallons of mash. Of those arrested, 43 were con victed in court and fined a total of $1,645. Twenty-three cases are now pending in federal and su perior courts. Red Cross chapters need men voltmteers for motor service, en tertainment and instruction serv ice, and for disaster emergency work. One of the most varied and colorful—as well as the most fra grant—of the series of art exhibits at the Fine Arts room. Southern Pines library. Is that which open ed this week under sponsorship of the Southern Pines Garden club. Flower prints, flower paintings, flower samplers, flowers in needlepoint, flowers painted on glass and china and just flowers themselves, in graceful arrange ments, make of the room a. spring song of beauty. Mrs. L. T. Avery and Mrs. B. F. Kraffert, Garden Club members in charge of the exhibit, have se cured many beautiful flower rep resentations, in a wide range of arts forms, on loan from Southern Pines homes and also from Miss Allie McIntosh’s Antique shop. The beautiful paintings shown by Miss McIntosh are also examples of fine framing done at her shop. Included in the display are a number of excellent French prints, a small glowing Van Gogh reproduction, an 18th century sampler, paintings of flower sellers of Old Charleston and one sample of the work of a local ar tist, a study of iris by Miss Emile May Wilson. An arrangement of flame-col ored camellias, a Chinese bowl of wild plum blossoms and a minia ture garden of pixy moss with trailing arbutus add to the charm of the exhibitt. McDonald, JR., son of Mr. and Mrs. L. D. McDonald of Southern Pines, has been moved to Charlotte as Piedmont Airlines traffic representative, from Cin cinnati ,Ohio, where he had held this position since last May. The transfer, effective March 1, repre sents a promotion and is also in dicative of Piedmont’s expanding program now that the Supreme Court has certified its right to continue operation. Mr. McDonald, a veteran of Navy service in the war, entered Piedmont’s employ two years ago. He was stationed at Raleigh until his promotion to the Cincinnati post. The airline, which heis a stop at Southern Pines-Pinehurst, has grown consistently in its two years of existence and is planning additional services to be inaugu rated soon. Roberts and Mrs. Daniel Roberts at their home on Elm street. The program ,was on the con temporary composer, James Rog ers. Mrs. W. Gilliam Brown gave the life of the composer. This was foUowed by “Ships at Sea,’’ by Rogers, played by Mrs. Herbert Poole. Mrs. McPhail gave a piano number “By Moonlight,’’ by Ben der. “Song Without Words’’ by Mendelssohn was given by Miss Ruth Tyson. Final plans were discussed for the opera, “School for Lovers,” which will be presented at the Carthage High school auditorium at 8 o’clock on March 11. The hostesses, assisted by Miss Ruth Tyson, served chicken salad, Ritz crackers, olives, cheese straws, fruit cake and coffee. The next meeting will be held March 17 at the Methodist church, at which time students of the va rious music teachers of the club will appear on the program. Pastors' Conference The South Sandy Creek Baptist Pastors’ conference, which is com posed of the Baptist pastors of Moore county, met Tuesday at the Carthage Baptist church. The Rev. L. M. Dixon, elected presi dent at the last meeting ,presid- ed. There will be regular month ly meetings at Carthage from now on. Tuesday’s meeting had as its theme, “Preparation for Vacation Bible School.” New Circle Formed Monday evening, meeting at the pastorium, a number of Baptist young women organized a new circle for the coming year. This will make the fourth circle in the Baptist women’s work. Banquet For Teams Mr. and Mrs. J. L. McGraw were hosts at a banquet at the Carthage hotel Friday night in 'honor of the boys’ and girls’ bas- ketbaU teams of the Carthage High school. There were 55 pres ent, including members of the team, cheer leaders, and interest ed faculty members. Jaimie Loy welcomed the guests and the response was made by Coach Young Allen. Mr. McGraw presented the speaker of the eve ning, H. F. Seawell, Jr., whose theme was “Sportsmanship in Life.” The school song was sung by the guests, accompani^ at the piano by Sandy Thomas. The banquet tables were decor ated with basketballs and a color scheme of, green and white was used, these being the school col ors. A turkey dinner was served. The dessert course consisted of ice cream and individual cakes iced in green and white with CHS em bossed on the top. To Hold Revival The Rev. Ottis J. Hagler will leave next Monday for Caroleen, where he will preach for ten days in a revival meeting. This is part of an Associational-wide revival in which 60 churches are partici pating. Personals Miss Elizabeth Ann McDonald is ill with influenza at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee McDonald. Dr. and Mrs. Dwight Currie have returned to Baltimore after having spent last week with Dr. Currie’s sister. Miss Mary Currie. Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Adsims spent the week end, in Charlotte. Mr. and Mrs. Murdock Prevost spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Prevost. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Auman of West End spent the week end with Mrs. Auman’s mother, Mrs. Beulah Womack. Mr. and Mrs. Winfred Howard have returned to Asheboro after spending a few days with Mrs. O. D. Wallace. Mrs. M. J. McPhail attended the state DAR meeting in Char lotte recently. Mrs. Leila Cox has been ill at her home here for several days. Mrs. Bert Moore and Miss Ruth Tyson attended classes in Chapel Hill Saturday, where they are studying organ. Mrs. Ahce Watson has retarded home from the Moore County hos pital. Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Loy and daughter, Judy, and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Robbins and two children of Graham were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jamie Loy last Sun day. Monroe Vaughn, Buddy Blue and Charles McLeod attended the Southern Conference Basketball tournament in Durham last Sat urday. Mrs. H. F. Seawell visited Mrs. Paul Freed in Greensboro one day last week. J. R. McPhail of Fayetteville was in Carthage last week. Miss Jean McDonald of Flora Macdonald college spent the week end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. J. McDonald.
