Even with baseball sesuon
coining to a head in no time
at all, it is somewhat startling
that a School for Umpires is
being held at Fort Bragg this
week, with some l.OQO men in
attend'ance.
These umpires are a differ
ent breed from the traditional
"blind-and-infirm" of dia
mond days, in fhiit they call
close decisions, not on strikes
and balls, but on fire power,
casualties, blown bridges and
missing highways.
This schooling at Fort
Bragg precedes the big Air-
bome-Air Transportability
maneuver. Exercise Swarmer,
which gets under way in mid-
April, involving some 35,000
troops of the Army and 5,000
airmen.
In announcing this school,
Lt. Gen. Lauris Horstad, the
maneuver commander, turned
its operation ovW to Brig.
Gen. Gerald J. "Jerry" Hig
gins, of Chicago, Ill., here
from Fort Ord. Calif., for the
assignment.
The curriculum of the
school hsus been duplicated
twice this year for similar ex
ercises MikL off Hawaii, and
Portrex, in the Caribbean..
