BESS McCASKILL (Continued from Page 1) fee basis, and returns of late years are generally considered to have run somewhat higher. Miss Mc- Caskill’s retention of the post would mean taking a pay cut with no chance'of a raise until a new law could be passed. The bill putting both these of fices on salary as of December 1, 1946, was introduced by Sepator W- H. Currie in the General As sembly of 1943, was passed and put on the statute books. In 1945, Senator Currie amended his bill to postpone the effective date to December 1, 1950. Miss McCaskill’s decision not to run caught the county short with no candidates in the field, as the possibility of dislodging the well-liked Miss McCaskill seemed too remote. With April 15 as the deadline for filing, it remains to be seen whether the ^lary wiU tempt anyone near her equal in efficiency. Clerk of Court The office of clerk of court will also go on a salary basis Decem ber 1, with the pay set at “not less than $3,600 nor more than $5,000,” again at the commission ers’ discretion. This also is con sidered to make a cut in money return certain for whoever gets the Job. CENSUS STARTS (Continued from Paee O one about income received in 1949. Citizens are reminded—all 'nformation is strictly confiden tial. Housing, Farmers The government will take two other censuses at the same time— one on housing, and the other ag ^ripultural. Questionnaires have slready been mailed out to farm ers, who are asked to fill them out in advance to save time when the enumerator gets there. Preparations for the census in the Eighth district ran into com plications this week when Mrs. Paul Raper, administrative clerk at the headquarters office at Lex ington, was taken ill and had to quit her Job. At last report no one had been found to succeed her in this essential position. However, said Mr. Brown, with the help of the crew leaders, who were trained at Lexington last week, all should be in readiness to start ■ounting noses bright and early Saturday morning.
