Shearmans Attend
Asheville Meeting
Col. P. G. Shearman, manager
of the Southern Pines Chamber
of Commerce, attended the west
ern division meeting of the N. C.
Credit Managers association held
Monday at the Battery Park hotel,
AshevHle.
He was accompanied by Mrs.
Shearman. They drove up Sun
day and returned Tuesday. While
in Asheville they also did consid
erable sightseeing in the moun
tain resort, visiting Biltmore Pal
ace and other places of interest.
Many forest landowners are
joining the North Carolina Tree
Farm Movement.

Plan Convention
A committee of the N. C. Credit
Women’s Breakfast Clubs, which
will meet here May 7, 8 and 9 in
conjunction with the state con
vention of the N. C. Merchants as
sociation, held a luncheon meet
ing at the Hollywood hotel Sun
day to formulate plans for the
event.

ville, second vice president; Mrs.
Violet Warner, Winston-Salem,
corresponding secretary; Mrs.
Mattie Shriner and Mrs. Clara
Scott, Winston-Salem, Mrs. Helen
Bayer and Mrs. Clara Whittle,
Greensboro.
Mrs. Scott, Mrs. Bayer and Mrs.
Whittle were accompanied by
their husbands, and also present
with the group was Mr. May,
manager of Belk’s store in Greens
boro and a sponsor of the Greens
boro Breakfast club.
After lunch Mrs. Prim was their
hostess on a guided tour of the
town, with especial reference to
hotels, restaurants and golf clubs
and courses. She also gave them
considerable literature about
Southern Pines to distribute in
their home clubs.
The Credit Women’s Breakfast
club is composed of women in ex
ecutive brackets in retail busi
nesses all over the state, sponsor
ed by the Merchants association
for professional improvement, ex
change of information and good
fellowship. The clubs also do
considerable civic and welfare
work.
Holy Week At

Catholic Churches
Holy Week at St. Anthony’s
Catholic church will begin with
the Palm Sunday masses at 8 and
10:30 a. m. Ble^ing and distri
bution of the palms will be held
at the 10:30 mass.
Wednesday, Station of the Cross
at 3:30 p.m. will be followed by
Benediction of the Most Blessed
Sacrament. “
Holy Thursday mass at 9 a.m.
will open the all-day Adoration
before the Repository of the Most
Blessed Sacrament. Prayer will
be constant during the day, cli
maxing with the Holy Hour at 8
p. m.
Good Friday, most solemn day
of the church year, will be mark
ed by the Mass of the Presancti
fied at 9 a.m. and Way of the
Cross at 2:30 p.m., with confes
sions beginning at 3 o’clock. '
Saturday will bring the Reading
of the Prophecies, Blessing of the
New Fire and Blessing of the Font
beginning at 6:30 a.m., followed
by mass. Confessions will be from
4 to 6, and from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
At Our Lady of Victory church
in West Southern Pines, blessing
and distribution of the palms will
be held at 10 a.m. Sunday. On
Holy Thursday, high mass will be
sung by the school children at 9
a.ni. Masses on Good Friday and
Holy Saturday will be at 7:30 a.m.
with the Way of the Cross at 3
p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Clyde Dunn
Passes Sunday
Mrs. Clyde T. Dunn, aged 51,
died suddenly Sunday night at St.
Joseph of the Pines hospital, after
being in failing health for several
months.
Requiem mass was held at St.
Anthony’s Catholic church at 10
a. in. Wednesday, with Father
John Brown of Sacred Heart
church, Pinehurst, officiating.

one daughter. Miss Louise Dunn,
all of Southern Pines; also two

FIRE AT BRAGG
Fire destroyed the Officers
Club at Pope Air Force Base
early Sunday morning. Dam
age was unofficially estima
ted at $50J)00.
No one was injured.
Capl. Gordon Andrews,
public information officer at
Fort Bragg, said firemen were
delayed about 30 minutes
when they were directed to a
spot about half a mile away
from the actual blaze.
Captain Andrews said a
board had been named to
prdoe the fire.
The club, which is on the
Bragg reservation, was built
during the war. The one story,
fr^une structure contained a
large ballroom and lounge.
