Ives, shown with him above. He was on his way to join his three sons for a brief vacation in Florida. Asked by a Pilot reporter for a statement on the McCarthy sena torial investigation, the governor was emphatic in his condemnation of such tactics. “It’s one of the njost outrageous performances ever pulled off,’’ he said. Governor Stevenson said he agreed with other public leaders that the attack on the State department was motivated purely by “politics” and that the comndunist angle had little to do with it, though he did not minimize this issue. Governor Stevenson said that he had hoped to come back to the Sandhills for a real visit later in the spring, but he doubted that he would be able to take another trip so soon. Antic Wind Blows Dust And Branches, Tumbles Treetop On Shaw House Roof The tail end of a windstorm sweeping up from the southwest caused high winds over North Carolina Monday of last week, which in the Sandhills produced a sandstorm looking like some thing out of a desert movie. Roads leading in and out of town were beclouded with the fly ing dust particles. In town, dead limbs were wrenched from many trees. The top of the noble old syca more in front of the Shaw House blew off and crashed down on the roof of the century-old cottage re stored by the Moore County His torical society. A hole was knock ed in the roof and a number of the hand-hewn cypress shingles were displaced. On being noti fied of the disaster by phone, Howard Burns, streets superin tendent, sent the town crew down to effect temporary repairs. Work is going on this week to restore the roof to its former beauty. Antenna Torn Down The antenna belonging to Col. C. H. Burkhead’s “ham” radio set, a special apparatus installed at some cost and difficulty at his home on Ridge street, was torn up by the blow. The wind made a special haz ard of a grass fire which started Monday about noon behind a house on West Pennsylvania ave nue, between Stephens and Gaines streets, and in a few sec onds had raced across the back lot. The Southern Pines volun teer firemen, arriving fast, had a job to do to stop the blaze before it reached one of the frame homes close by. The truck could not get anywhere close and they worked with two Indian fire- pumps (manually opersfted) plus rakes and hoes to^get the fire out in double-quick time. The only building damaged was a lone “Chic Sale” standing in the path of the flames. Forest Fire That night, an alarm brought the firemen rushing to the aid of the N. C. Forest Service crew in fighting a large fire which swept several acres of field and forest on Morganton road west, just south of the city limits. Wind blowing hard in the direction of l^est Southern Pines constituted a serious threat. The fire, how ever, was stopped in a fight which lasted from 8:30 until about 11 o’clock. 1 SUBSCRIBE TO THE PILOT— MOORE COUNTY'9 LEADING NEWS WEEKLY. Edmund Aycock of Laurel Hill represented North Carolina on the National Peach Council which adopted a resolution opposing the anti-trust lawyer’s suit against the A & P Food stores because the ac tion “endangers American busi ness generally.” Matthews and Poole were pres ent as directors of the council, with Aycock as alternate. j In the resolution adopted at Washington, D. C., during the council’s ninth annual conference, A & P and the Atlantic Commis sion company, its produce-buying affiliate, were described as “con cerns which have served us and customers well.” Criticizing the suit, the council said it felt “such a precedent en dangers American business gener ally, and especially other large' concerns now operating effective ly in the marketing and process ing of farm products.” The resolution also expressed the council’s appreciation to dis tributors and retailers (both chains and independents) for their aids to production and marketing. Twenty-two states had repre- sentati'fes listed as directors or alternates on the conference pro gram.
