Women’s Activities and Sandhills Social Events Mrs. R. P. Brown Is Honored For Her Unselfish Christian Service Mrs. R. P. Brown, at the an nual meeting of the Women of the Church of Fayetteville Presby tery held in Fayetteville Wednes day, April 12, was honored with a Life Membership in the Presby terian Women of the Church U. S., as a gift of the local Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Women of the 'Church. Ill for several weeks, Mrs. Brown was unable to be present, but hdr citation and gold pin were accepted for her by Mrs. Joe C. Thomas, president of the local group. The citation reads as follows: To M¥s. R. P. Brown, who, by the unselfish giving of herself in the service of our Lord, has been an inspiration to us with her wise counsel and her beautiful Christian example, the Brownson Mem orial Women of the Church present this Honorary Life Membership in token of their love and appreciation. Mrs. Brown, who came to us from Norfolk, Va., only a few years ago, has already served as president of the Women of the Church, secre tary of Spiritual Life, secre tary, treasurer, Sunday School jieacher, Presbyterial Secretary of White Cross Work', chairman of Church Extension (1950), and is now chairman-elect of District 6 of Fayetteville Presbyterial. This Life Membership is the second to be presented by the Btrownson Church women; the first was given to Mrs. Catherine Shaw a few years ago. With the meeting of this circle (which had been postponed from Tuesday morning), the total attendance of all six circles for the month of April was 79. Those attending Fayetteville Presbyterial at the First Presby terian church at Fayetteville on •April 12 from Brownson Memo rial were: Mrs. Joe C. Thomas, president of the local Women of the Church; Mrs.. Howard N. But ler, Mrs. L. L. Woolley, Mrs. Lloyd Prime, Mrs. Roy R. Newton, Mrs. David McCallum and Mrs. Paul P. McCain. The Presbyterian Women of the Church held their April meeting last Monday night at the church, with the president, Mrs. Joe C. Thomas, in the chair. Mrs. David MpCallum conducted the devo tions. After circle reports, reports of committee chairmen, announce ments and other business, Mrs. Dorothy Avery, chairman of the committee on Educatibn, present ed a fine program entitled “In the Fellowship of Saints.” She was assisted by Mrs. Way land Blue, Mrs. Walter Harper and Mrs. Dan Ray. Episcopal Youth Group Discusses Religion On Campus Last Sunday night the Young People’s Service League of Em manuel church met for a buffet supper at 6 p. m. in the parish house, having as guests a group of five members of the Canterbury club from Chapel Hill. After the meal, which was pro vided by the St. Ann’s Guild, Miss Rosemary Dundas welcomed the visitors, who gave talks on aspects of college life, particularly as re ligion is represented on the campus of the University. Miss Elizabeth MulleV, Francis Joiner Albert Rosemond, James Dough erty, and Paul Proctor made up he delegation. Next Sunday the Service League, meeting at the usual time, 7 p. m., will again have a Visiting speaker in the person of Miss Eleanor Snyder, who serves the diocese of North Carolina in many ways, directing summer camps and conferences. N. Y., with her sister. Miss Eliza beth Lament, brings a breezy ac count of her activities since leav ing here and the welcome news that she will be returning to Southern Pines early next week. Leaving Easter Sunday night with her daughter. Miss Nancy Boyd, who was returning to New York after a short visit here, Mrs. Boyd-stopped overnight in Balti more with her son James, who is working on The Baltimore Sun then went to New York for three days with her daughter. On Wednesday, she had Sir Basil and Lady Brooke to dinner, with Miss Boyd, Miss Sylvia Stal ling and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Paine, at the Cosmopolitan Club. After a weekend at Millbrook, she was to go Monday to New Ha ven to visit the Carl Lohmanns and to attend a party for the new Yale University president, Whit ney Griswold. Mr. and Mrs. Gris wold visited in Southern Pines Pines as guests of Mrs. J. H. An drews for 10 days in the spring of 1948. Thistle Club Elects Officers Mrs. Howard Hoffman was elected president of the Thistle The wedding of Miss Janie Hearn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Hearn of Pinebluff, and Tom Brandon, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Brandon of Clover, S. C., was solemnized in an Easter Sun day ceremony at the Pinebluff Methodist church performed at three o’clock in the afternoon by Dr. W. A. Parsons, assisted by the Rev. J. R. Regan. The altar was decorated with white gladioli. Miss Ruth Troutman, organist, and Miss Doris McMasters, vocal ist, of Pinebluff, presented a pro gram of wedding music. Davis, and Haynes Britt, delegate. Bird Club Plans Another Field Trip The Southern Pines Bird club met Tuesday, with a walk in the Bird Sanctuary followed by the business meeting. Many varieties of birds were listed on the walk- as more migrants are arriving each day. As the recent trip to Powell’s pond was so enjoyable, another trip there is planned for next Tuesday, April 25, for the morn ing, starting at 9:30 a. m., prompt ly, from the home of Miss Louise Haynes, 160 South Bennett street. The president is asking that all members with cars help with transportation, and the club in vites any who are interested in birds to go on this field trip. Mrs. Perkins won the door prize, a homemade cocoanut cake; Mrs. Pearson Pusinelli of New York won a handsome lace din ner cloth donated by a northern friend who also contributed the prizes, and the non-players prize, a white azalea given by Carolina Gardens, went to Mrs. Tom Beu:- ron. Circles Unite To Hear Mrs. Dwight Eastern Star Meets This Week . Magnolia Chapter* No. 26, 0» der of Eastern Star, will hold its regular meeting this evening (Fri day) at 8 o’clock in the Masonic hall, and will welcome all mem bers and visitors. With Mrs. Alice Adams, Mrs Preston Stancil and Mrs. David Hoskins as hostesses, the two Circles of the First Baptist church, Dorothy Wonderly and Willing Workers, met at Magnolia Lodge Tuesday afternoon with 37 mem bers present. After meeting separately for brief business sessions which were presided over by Mrs. W. E. Ki- vette and Mrs. Stancil, the two groups came together in the lobby of the Lodge to hear an intensely interesting talk on “German Youth Activity” by Mrs. F. M Dwight. At the close of the speaker’s talk, she was presented a gift of appreciation from the Circles, and the group lingered for an infor mal period of conversation. The hostesses served refreshments of green and white block ice cream and cookies. Miss Dorothy Ann Swisher of Southern Pines was selected Queen of the Sandhills in the Beauty Contest feature of the Pinehurst Volunteer Fireman’s benefit dance held last Friday night in the Pinehurst High School gymnasium. Miss Betty Jean Hurst, another Southern Pines girl, won second place. Both she and Miss Swisher were sponsored by the Southern Pines High school. Winner of third place was Miss Joan Way Mathis of Carthage, who was sponsored by the Joseph G. Henson American Legion post. Miss Swisher went to Charlotte as “Miss Southern Pines” to- take part in the 1949 Christmas Festi val events, having won this honor in competition with a number of attractive local high school girls- Miss Hurst, at the close of the recent basketball season, was sel ected for the Moore County All Star team as a guard. Miss Mathis was Sandhills Queen in 1947, and last year was chosen as “Miss Carthage” in the July 4 celebra tion. Iducation Leader To Visit Emmanuel Ipiscopal Church Miss Eleanor Snyder, consul tant in Religious Education for the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina, will visit Emmanuel church next Sunday, and spend several days in Southern Pines. During her stay she will meet with teachers of the Sunday school, parents of the children of the Parish, and address the Young People’s Fellowship. A joint meeting of parents and teachers will be held at 8 p. m. Monday night, April 24, in the parish hall, it was announced by the Rector, the Rev. Charles Co- vell. Miss Snyder makes her resi dence in Raleigh, but visits throughout the state, being active in conferences for youth and adults alike. DESSERT BRIDGE GIVEN BY CIVIC CLUB FETES SOUTHERN PINES SCHOOL FACULTY Honoring the faculty of the Southern Pines school, the Civic club entertained at a dessert bridge at the clubhouse last Thurs day night, with additional towns people coming in for the party. Miss Ann Huntington, who plans to retire at the end of this school year, was presented a cor sage as a special courtesy. Refreshments were served. Maxwell Greys Entertain Guests Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell Grey have as their guests for several weeks their daughter and grand daughter, Mrs. J. H. Downing and Mary Anne, of Littleton, N. H. Other guests of the Greys are her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Goe, of New Haven, Conn. They have purchased a lot on Indiana avenue and May street, and plan to build during the sum mer and to stay with the Greys until their house is completed, ex cept for two weeks in May when they will be in Florida. Mr. Goe recently retired as manager of Warner Brothers’ New Haven office. Upon his retire ment he was honored at a testi monial banquet, attended by more than 200 Warner Brothers repre sentatives from) that district and New York City, on which occa sion he was presented a hand some gift. 'Tuckerman, one of the founding members of the Sandhills Woman’s Exchange, was elected president of the Exchange at a meeting held Friday at the home of Mrs. Harry W. Norris in Pinehurst. Mrs. Tuckerman returned with Mr. Tuckerman last year to their home near Eagle Springs, aftp having lived for some years in Boston. At the Exchange election, Mrs. W. D. Campbell of Southern Pines was retun^d to the office of vice president. Mrs. Julian F. Barnes and Mrs. Wallace W. Simpson, both of Pinehurst, were elected to the offices of secretary and treas urer, respectively. Mrs. William Romero Is Honored At Party Mrs. John D. Stephenson and Miss Pauline Crain were co-host esses at a delightful party at the Stephenson home Friday evening, honoring Mrs. William Romero.
