Safety Measures
For Maneuvers
An over-all safety program for
protection of, Exercise Swarmer
personnel and residents of sur
rounding communities in this
North Carolina area was initiated
this week by Lieut. Gen. Lauris
Norstad, commander of the ma
neuvers now getting under way at
Camp MackaU.
The program, designed to pre
vent and minimize hazards during
the maneuver, will be administer
ed by two safety experts from
Washington, D. C., both with pre
vious military experience as safe
ty directors.
Administration of the $20,000
safety program will fall on the
shoulders of Harold L. Rush of
Crawfordsville, Ind., former safe
ty engineer of the Military Air
Transport Service, and Louis
Shoemaker of Hot Springs, Ark.,
who occupied a similsu: position
with the 11th Air Force. Both
men have been assigned to Gen-
erald Norstad’s staff.
Some of the means used to min
imize hazards and insure safety,
not only to the maneuver person
nel but to residents of nearby
areas, is a plan set up to control
vehicular traffic in coordination
with the North Carolina State
Highway department.
Protection of local communities
against forest fires will be accom^
plished by equipping troops with
the necessary fire fighting equip
ment. .
Swarmer ,a joint operation of
the Air and Ground Forces, is the
first tactical operation in which
an airborne assault and subse
quent airhead will be supplied en
tirely by air. In addition to ap
plying the principles learned dur
ing the Berlin airlift, the maneu-
iver will test new equipment and
I tactical concepts.

J, T. Lucas of West End will
seed a sericea meadow strip on
his farm this spring. The purpose
of this meadow strip is to provide
a suitable outlet for terrace
water. After the meadow has been
established, terraces can be built
in such a manner that the water
can empty into the meadow and
be carried into the nearby woods
without causing any erosion. This

— SAVE A LIFE!
The flowers were mighty pretty
at Pinehurst, and the temptation
to break a few was irresistible to
a man celebrating Easter Monday.
Yet Jack Black, white man of
West End, Bt. 1, might have done
better to go. to a florist’s shop. For
$25. his fine in recorders court
Monday, plus costs he could have
bought a lot of flowers.
It wasn’t just the flowers hut
the general hearty manner of cel
ebration undertaken by Black
which drew the penalty. Judge
Rowe indicated in finding him
guilty of public drunkenness. He
also acquitted Jack of a charge of
theft brought against himi by a
Pinehurst resident, who missed
some things not long after Jack
had passed by in happy mood.
The missing items were found
later in a hole in the back yard of
the home, and how they got there
has yet to be ascertained.
As usual, there were plenty of
speeders and violators of other
traffic laws up before the court,
and Judge Rowe paused in the
.proceedings several times to
1 spGsk his mind, about such of"
'fenses. 'lt is getting so now, he
said, the highways of North Car
olina are about as unsafe as any
where in the world and “it has
got to stop.”
Speeding cases and their dispo
sition: Julian P. Grimm, Carth
age, also careless and reckless
dri'ving, 30 days suspended, $25
and costs; Lee Hamilton Lane, Jr..
Southern Pines, $15 and costs;

for judgment continued on pay
ment of costs John Robert Bray,
Pittsboro, Rt. 1, prayer for judg

Cameron, Rt. 1; James Husey,

sentences, suspended on payment
of $100 and costs, with license re
vocation for 12 months; C. Lee
Simpson (also careless and reck
less), appealed for jury trial
which was set May 2 and previous
forfeiture of cash bond stricken
out.
Other traffic law offenses—
Clayde McKenzie, Vass, Rt. 2,

iding with another car causing
damage, prayer for judgment con
tinued on payment of costs as evi
dence showed damage had been
paid; John S. Caddell, Vass, en
tering highway carelessly and
recklessly, $25 and costs;
Just one liquor case showed up
on Monday’s docket, that of Quin
ton Johnson, of Cameron, convict- _
ed of unlawful possession of illicit
whiskey and sentenced to three
months on the roads, sentence sus
pended on payment of $25 and
costs and good behavior condi
tions for two years.

I wish to announce that I am a
candidate for the North Carolina ]
Legislature, from Moore County,
on the Democratic ticket, subject
to the action of the voters in the |
primary May 27, 1950.
I think the time has come when
the hand of Government should
be stopped from digging deeper
and deeper into the pockets of the |
Taxpayers. The tax load is al- j
ready too heavy and I am opposed
to adding to it. On the other hand
it is hoped that the tax payer may
be benefited by the inauguration
of more efficient and economical
methods of governmental admin
istration. Should the citizens of ]
Moore County select me to repre
sent them in the next General
Assembly, I shall seek to carry out
these policies. I will greatly ap
preciate your support.
