Friday, June 9, 1950 Two hundred years ago the story of the Liberty Bell began when the Pennsylvania Assembly ordered a belfry to be built for a “suitable bell" atop the stair tower of the new State House in Philadelphia. This year, the Bell IS again serving its country as the insigne of the U. S. Savings Bonds Independence drive, May 15 to July 4. May 30, at the Carthage High school, with Dr. Amos Abrams, editor of North Carolina Education, making the address. His remarks were provo cative and timely with a clever hurnorous preface. presented by Fred Fhnchum, chairman of the school board. Mrs. L. R. Sugg delivered the inedals, which were won by Sandy Thomas and Ruth Douglas Currie. Sandy gave a piano solo by Chopin. Ida Martin McDonald won the ^'=*l°^®rship given by the Sandhills Veterans Association, which was presented by Dr War- lick. School medals were awarded as tollows: valedictorian, Lillie Ellen Wise; salutatorian, Nancy Wal lace; Citizenship, Carolyn Hall- boys athletics, O. D. He. told them of the ‘teactor machine ’ which would be on duty downtown through courtesy of the Aetna Life Insurance com pany , to test the individual’s re action time, important in the em ergency stopping of a car. Rota-* nans were detailed to staff the machine for a Saturday morning demonstration.
