Condemnatiou of
Land For Negro
School Is Sought
The Moore County board of ed
ucation started condemnation pro
ceedings last week against Mrs.
Bettie F. Benner of Carthage,
seeking to acquire title to six
acres of land adjoining the
grounds of the Pinckney (Nfegro)
school at Carthage.
Mary E. Siler, Bennie Siler,
Nellie Siler and “other interested
persons” are named as defendant
parties, on account of 31-year-old
uncancelled mortgage against the
property.
The board asks the court to ap
point a disinterested appraisal
board to set a price and assess
damages accruing from the con
demnation, then to order the con
demnation, and appropriation of
the land to school uses.
These uses, it is understood, are
for extension of the school yard
and a possible site for the build
ing of the proposed elementary
school, in which a number of
small schools in northern Moore
county will be consolidated. State
regulations forbid new school
construction on a campus of less
than 20 acres. The board of edu
cation recently purchased eight
acres from Mrs. Benner, and oth
er adjoining land is being ac
quired.

Koloudis Denies
Ex-Associate's Charges
Christ Koloudis, Aberdeen res
taurateur, answering suit brought
by his nephew and erstwhile part
ner Michael Kolodis, stated in ci
vil papers filed this week that
Michael was an employee of the
Aberdeen restaurant and never a
partner, and, contrary to his
charges, had received far more
compensation during their associ

titled to.
He denied his nephew was for-
Mexico in the early days of the
war was a nest of espionage, said
Arch F. Coleman,, former OSS
undercover agent, in a talk before
the Southern Pines Eotary club
last Friday.
The Japanese were dealing with
Mexicans to get all sorts of vital
equipment out of the country.
Tracking down and blocking these
deals was part of his job. In this
he had the aid of some valuable
assistants, one of them a girl sec
retary whose knowledge of the
Japanese language came in hand
ily.
Mr. Coleman revealed that at
one time the Japanese had set up
a radio network all down the
west coast of Mexico. His discov
ery of this fact, reported to the
proper authorities, prevented its
going into use.
The speaker, a public relations
counselor with office in Southern
Pines, was introduced by Johnie
A. Hall, program chairman. E. J.
Austin presided over the luncheon
meeting which was held at the
Village Inn. Only visitor was Dr.
James W. Silver, a former resident
now head of the history depart

ippi, who was returning to this
Dosition after a year spent at the
University of Aberdeen, Scotland,
on a Fulbright scholarship.
cibly ejected front the business,
stating that he “quit because he
would not cooperate, of his own
volition.”
Koloudis denied also that he
was squandering the proceeds of
the business as charged, declaring
that he is running a “nice profit
able business, catering to the bet
ter class; that the customer's are
well pleased and the business is
solvent and progressing.

The sheriff’s department re

was injured Saturday evening
with a blast from a shotgun in the
hands of his father-in-law, G. C.
Collins. Both men live in the
Cameron section.
At the Moore county hospital it
was learned that Sercy’s condition
is considered critical, though he is
showing slight improvement fol
lowing an operation performed
soon after he wa? admitted Satur
day night. He was wounded in
the left abdomen and left hand.
No arrest has been made, pend

in defense of his home and him
self, officers said.
Patrolman Apple, who investi
gated the shooting, said that a
quarrel had apparently taken
place between Sercy and his wife,
and Mrs. Sercy took refuge at her
father’s home. Sercy followed
her, accompanied by his brother
Haywood and a half-brother, sur-
named DuPree. Collins latched
the screen door against them, and
Sercy is said to have tried to
wrest it open, then picked up a
rock and came at the door, which
Collins was defending.
Collins said he reached for his
gun, opened the door and fired.
Sercy was free^ at this month’s
term of criminal court of a charge
of felonious assault against his in
fant daughter. The case fell
through when Mrs. Sercy, the
only witness, refused to testify.
