Moore’s Biggest Still In 15 Years
Destroyed Near Chatham County Line
County And Federal
Officers Cooperate
In Giant Seizure
Through the cooperation of law
enforcement officers of four coun
ties and Federal agents, the larg
est still to be found in Moore
county in 15 years was destroyed
early last Friday, and three, men
placed under arrest.
The large steam outfit, discov
ered several days previously, was
first thought to be in Chatham
county, officers said. However,
it was later decided that it was
about 200 or 300 yards inside
Mpore county.
The officers destroyed a 185-
gallcn stave type steam distillery,
1,000 gallons mash, 500 gallons of
spent mash, several cases of jars,
and a quantity of coke, three up
right boilers, seven large ferment
er boxes, and 15 barrels.
Released under bond for trial at
the September term of Federal
Court in Rockingham were: Ralph
Scott, 41, of Bear Creek; Walter
Ray Hamby, alias Baxter Green,
29, of Reidsville; Willard Thomas
Huffman, 38, of Glen Raven.
I The still had been under obser

that it could be captured while in
operation., It was on land adjacent
to Ralph Scott’s farm, and Scott
was placed under arrest. His ar
rest led to the arrest of his broth
er-in-law, Huffman.
Sheriff John Emerson and his
deputies of Chatham county.
Chief ABC Officer C. A. McCal-
lum, ABC Officer John K. Sharpe,
Deputy Sheriff A. W. Lambert of
Moore County, ABC Officers Col
lins and Harris of Durham coun
ty, Federal ATU Agents Bill Tick-
tent George Yutzq, J. R. Brandon,
and Smith were in on the discov
ery and observation of the still.
McCallum and Special Investi
gator (ATU) Marvin Dunn follow
ed the alleged operators to Ala
mance county. It was there that
Alamance Sheriff Hallie Moore
made available his men and
equipment. The Burlington police
department also cooperated in the
far-flung investigation.
Scott was . carried to Durham
for a hearing before Federal Com
missioner Henry Bane, who set
bond at $500. After the hearing
McCallum and Dunn went to Ala
mance county. It was not until
2:30 Saturday morning that both
Huffman and Hamby had been
apprehended and given hearings
at Burlington before Federal
Commissioner Earl V. Patterson.
Bond for Huffman was $500, and
$1,000 for Hamby. Also seized was
a 1948 Pontiac car of Huffman’s,
and Hamby’s 1946 Mercury.
The still location was a few
miles north of Glendo-n in Moore
county, but it was necessary to go
into Chatham county in order to
reach it by road. Officer McCal
lum says the investigation is be
ing continued and there may be
more developments later.

Is it time tor
Deciaration
ot Independence?
The men who wrote the first one struggled to put new ideas into simple
words. Humbly, they tried to set down clearly certain rights of man that
could be called God-given, and hard-to-say things of a spiritual nature —
truth, equality, freedom.
And the words came alive, and the ideas shone clear. The idea that
each man is more important than his government; his independence more
precious than his security; his spiritual strength more lasting than his armies.
Upon these ideas, a nation grew great.
There are always people who fear such ideas — even today, even in
America. These people feel that man cannot be trusted with his destiny.
They are working to make government the master — instead of the servant
— of the people.
Their distrust of the individual has spreaid frighteningly in the past
few years.
It can be stopped by idfeas — the same ideas spelled out in the Declara
tion of Independence.
It’s time for all of us, privately and in public, to declare once again
oiu- independencer-to speak up for freedom, and against anything that
threatens it.
The trend toward more and more government controls is a threat to
every business, every faniily, every individual. Thai’s why we bring you
this message.
