Tom Cole, native of Carthage,
who has now returned there to
live, was recently presented a Cer
tificate of life membership in the
Federal and State Inspectors’ as
sociation of America, with an
Award of Merit for his outstand
ing work in the, association, and
for the Fruit and Vegetable In
spection Service, over many years.
Mr. Cole retired in February as
Chief of the Division of Markets
with the Clemson College Exten
sion Service in South Carolina,
after almost 40 years in agricul
tural, marketing and inspection
work.
He is given a major share of the
credit for improvement of the
commercial pack of peaches,
sweet potatoes and vegetables in
the southeastern states, and in
promotion of legislation which set
up the South Carolina Marketing
Commission. He assisted th§ Com
mission in setting up the famous
and modern Columbia market, an
outstanding outlet for farmers and
wholesalers of the extern sea
board.
In 1948 Mr. Cole received the
Progressive Farmer’s “Man of the
Year” award. Many other honors
have come to him, climaxed by
the recognition accorded by the
Federal and State Inspectors As
sociation at its annual meeting.
Membership of the association,
numbering 375 from states of the
eastern seaboard, gave unanimous
expression to regrets at the loss of
his active services, with best
wishes for enjoyment of his well-
earned retirement.
Mr. Cole graduated from N. C.
State college in 1913. During
World War 1 he became one of
Uncle Sam’s early wartime pilots,
serving overseas. Following his
release from the Army Air Force
he was for several years a county
agent, then entered the Fruit and
Vegetable Inspection Service,
working in States from Florida to
New York.
In 1930 he became assistant
chief of the Division of Markets
at Clemson college, receiving his
promotion to chief in 1939.

members are taking part in the
State 4-H Week assembly in Ral
eigh.
Girls attending are: Betty Sue
Brewer of the Westmoore club,
county winner in the 4-H dress
revue, whose expenses for the
week are being paid as a prize for
her first place in the revue; Sylvia
Davis of the Carthage club; and
Nancy Snider of the Robbins club.
Boys attending are: George
Cooper of the Vass-Lakeview
club,. Neill Cameron of the Cam
eron club and Gilbert Purvis of
the Highfalls club. Purvis was
unable to leave with the Moore
county group on Monday but was
expected to go later in the week.
W. G. Caldwell, assistant farm
agent, and Mrs. Ruth H. Muse, as
sistant home agent, accompanied
the Moore county young people to
Raleigh Monday. Mr. Caldwell
was planning to return early in
the week, but Mrs. Muse was to
remain for the entire five days.
Miss Brewer was to take part in
the State. 4-H dress review contest
during the week.
The five-day program includes
outstanding speakers, tours, a tea
at the Governor’s Mansion Tues
day with Mrs. Kerr Scott as host
ess, demonstrations, panel discus
sions and finals in several con-
tests.

ing three weeks in the Shearwood
cottage. Mr. Dudley, who is con
nected with the Washington office
of the British Overseas Air Con
stellation, is handling reserva
tions for the Shearwood Travel
Service during the temporary ab
sence of Mrs. John Dundas.

Mrs. Ida C. Buie
Passes, Aged 80
Mrs. Ida Cameron Buie, 80, of
Cameron Rt. 2, died Tuesday af
ternoon at her home, following ^
fall several weeks ago in which
her hip was broken. She was a
native of Moore county.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday afternoon at Cypress
Presbyterian church, conducted
by the Rev. A. D. Carswell, fol
lowed by burial in tl^e church
cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter,
Mrs. Vera McCoy ,and one sister.
Miss Mary Anne Cameron, both of
Cameron Rt. 2; also one brother,
J. W. Cameron of Sanford.

geles July 28. They will embark
from Los Angeles aboard the SS
Lurine for Honplulu, Hawaii,
where they will be guests at the
