A meeting of the Moore County Artificial Breeding Association, to hear annual reports and conduct other business, will be held just before the Farm Bureau session. T. Clyde Auman of Wiest End is president of the Association. Demonstration On Root Knot Slated New equipment for treating soil to control root knot on tobac co will be demonstrated at the fairgrounds in Carthage Wednes day at 2 p. m., it was announced this week by E. H. Garrison, Moore County farm agent. ' John Ferguson, extension en gineer from State College, Ra leigh, will conduct the demonstra tion and will also demonstrate control of weeds and grass in corn. Gravesr Mutual Insurance Agency Telephone 2-2201 Southern Pines The tennis season is getting un der way, with first matches with out-of-town teams upcoming for both the senior and junior Sand hill Tennis Association teams, and tournament plans going full steam ahead. The Junior Sandhill Tennis team will be hosts Saturday after noon to a team from Kinston. Matches will be held on the city courts. The senior team, in charge of Ray Schilling, will meet the chal lenging UNC freshman team from Chapel Hill April 25, on the local courts. In June, the Eastern Car olina League series will start, with seven teams participating. These and other plans were dis cussed at the monthly meeting of the Sandhill Tennis Association di rectors held Monday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank de Costa, with Mrs. Paul T. Barnum, president, in charge. Patti Wood- ell, JSTA representative on the board, was present with two oth er juniors, Lillian Bullock and Frances Pearson. Walter Harper, treasurer, re ported a balance of $525.35, enough to give the association a good start on the season but not enough to carry them through. Ways and means of making more money were discussed. Plans were set moving for the firsf upcoming tournament, the Moore County Schools Tourna ment to be held in May. Arrange ments for the event, including definite dates, were left with the junior group who will have Don Moore as adviser from the senior association. H. L. Brown was ap pointed by Mrs. Bamum to coor dinate several suggestions made for trophies to be awarded at this tournament. Ray Schilling reported on the recent meeting of the Eastern Car olina Tennis Association, at which Durham was selected to be again the site of the junior tournament, with Chapel Hill or Rocky Mount for the adult event. Two of the defending champions are Sand hill members, Lillian Bullock in junior singles and doubles and Mildred Gruebl in women’s doubles. Whit Cobb of Durham, well known on local courts, was elected president of the ECTA. It was decided unanimously that the Sandhill AssociatioA will pay expenses of its tennis team’s out-of-town trips to the extent of three cents a mile for the car, and one meal for each player, DR. SOUTHGATE LEIGH, Jr., of Norfolk, has been appointed chief surgeon for the Seaboard Air Line Railroad, succeeding Dr. Joseph D. Collins, who has retired. Dr. Leigh will main tain offices in the Seaboard’s headquarters building in Nor folk. EASTER SEAL SALE Boxes for contributions to the Easter Seal campaign of the Moore County Society for Crippled Chil dren have been placed in local stores, Mrs. Betty Coley, Southern Pines chairman for the drive, said this week. Persons who do not receive seals in the mail and wish to contribute are asked to send donations directly to Mrs. Coley. The Southern Pines goal is $500. LeTourneau Talks Heard By Crowds Here^ At Aberdeen “I believe that many people have just enough of religion to make them miserable,” said Rob ert G. LeTourneau, of Longview, Texas, the self-taught mechanical genius who pioneered in manufac turing earth-moving machinery, to around 1000 people who braved a down-pour of rain to attend the Christian Youth rally held in the Aberdeen school gym Saturday night. “There is no way you can jus tify a half-hearted Christian life. You have got to go all the way,” he said. After telling of his ups and downs and how he came to know Christ and his dedication to “Do my best to be God’s business man,” he said, “It’s not how much money I shall give to the Lord, but how much of the Lord’s money I shall keep for myself.” This is Mr. LeTourneau’s motto. Many Ai Meeting Sunday afternoon Mr. LeTour neau spoke before a capacity crowd in the Southern Pines High School auditorium giving dynamic testimony to the power of God and the need for living the Chris tian life. At the 11 o’clock service in the Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church Sunday morning a packed congregation was on hand to hear him. He was brought to Moore County through the efforts of the Brownson Memorial Men of the Church, led by A. L. Burney. A large gathering at Carthage also, heard Mr. LeTourneau earlier Sunday. Arrives In Rain Despite the heavy rain Satur day afternoon, a crowd of some 200 people were at the Knollwood Airport to greet the LeTourneau party, and went on to the Holly wood Hotel for a reception.
