PAGE FOURTEEN THE PILOT News and Personals from Vass Bessie Cameron Smilh, Representalive — Telephone Vass 2171 Commencement Programs Vass-Lakeview Commencement gets underway tonight (Friday) at 8 p. m.—the hour for all events of the high school finals—when Mrs. Herbert Mclnnis will present her piano pupils in a recital in the school- auditorium, to which the public is invited. The Rev. L. B. McKeitheh, Jr., of Fayetteville will preach the baccalaureate sermon Sunday night at the school, and special music will be a feature. Monday night. Class Day exer cises will be held. Graduation, with awarding of diplomas, medals and other awards, will take place Tuesday night. There will be no guest speaker, but five of the seniors will give talks. At 9 a. m. Tuesday, Jere Mc- Keithen of Aberdeen, a member of the Coimty Board of Education, will speak at the 8th grade com mencement exercises and certifi cates will be presented. Seniors Entertained Mrs. Earl Ferguson, Mrs. D. M. Rollins and Mrs. W. C. Trogden, mothers of seniors, entertained the senior class at a wiener roast at Pinebluff Lake Saturday night. The freshmen planned a hay ride for the seniors for Thursday night, but on account of rain held their party at the Community House, where they roasted wien ers, toasted marshmallows and played. Final Service The Rev. Edwin C. Boulton will hold his final preaching service at the Vass Methodist Church at 11 a. m. Sunday morning, before going to the Iowa conference. There will be special music. Spiveys Visit Here Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Spivey of Sanford, Route 1, and the Rev. and Mrs. Raymond B. Spivey of Palmyra, Mo., called on Mrs. P. A. Wilson Sunday. The Rev. Mr. Spivey, who was supply pastor of the Vass Presbyterian Church while a seminary student, is a commissioner for the Missouri Synod to the General Assembly meeting in Montreat this week. Mr. Spivey has written the words of an Easter hymn which was given the entire cover page space of the Presbyterian Outlook for April 12 and was used in many churches during the Easter season. Young Adult Conference At the Presbyterian Church last Sunday morning Mr. Woodson of the First Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville spoke in the interest of a Young Adult Conference to be held at Flora Macdonald Col lege, Red Springs, June 12-13, un der sponsorship of the Religious Education Commission of the Presbyterian Church. He was ac companied by Mrs. Wloodson and Mrs. James of Fayetteville. Classes Entertained Mrs. Curt Flannigan, whose husband. Sergeant Flannigan, is located at Ranger Station No. 3, entertained Mrs. John McCrum- men’s fifth ferade and Mrs. W. A. Muse’s third grade of Vass-Lake view School in celebration of her daughter Joanne’s birthday. Joanne, is in the fifth grade and the other Flannigan children. Curt and Jean, are in the third. ^ Assembling in Mrs. Muse s room, the children were shown 5 slRies of places the Flannigan^ visited during their residence in Alaska, then the, fifth graders went to their home room and both rooms were served decorated cakes and drinks. Farewell Party R. E. Beasley’s seventh-eighth grade combination of Vass-Lake- view School held a farewell party at Dunrovin Cafe from 8 to 10 p. m. Monday, with Mr. and Mrs. Wade Poole serving as host and hostess. Toasts, contests, fortune telling and dancing were enjoyed, with John Davis of the high school call ing figures. Polly Key told Mr. Beasley’s fortune and Jerry Smith presented him a chocolate cake. Tommy Oldham and Eunice Hold er were crowned King and Queen of the party. There were favors for all and Mrs. Beasley and Miss Mary Beasley, who were guests, presented balloons to the pupils. Refreshments were served. Voice Recital Vass friends received invitations to a voice recital given by Miss Faye Corbett, soprano, at the Woman’s Club in Clayton May 27. Her teacher, Inez Woollen Gulley was her accompanist. Miss Corbett is th^ daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. M. Corbett of Clayton and lived in Vass for sev eral years in her childhood, just prior to the family’s moving to Clayton. Personals Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Garrett of Danville, Va., and Mrs. Nannie Reynolds of Madison spent Sun day with Mrs. T. L. McNair. Mrs. McNair had as her guest Thurs day her sister, Mrs. C. C. Council, of Cameron. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Morgan and sons, Bruce and David, spent the weekend with her mother, Mrs. Annie Shankle, a:t Ansonville. Arnold Futrell of Roxboro vis ited his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Horace Mullinix, the first of the week. Mr. and Mrs. John H. Rosser and small daughter, Ann, of Char lotte spent Saturday night and Sunday with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. R. G. Rosser. Mr. and Mrs. D. P. Stewart, Miss Catherine Stewart, and Troy Creed of Aberdeen spent last weekend at Shallotte Beach. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Frye were in Kighfalls Sunday afternoon to visit his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Kennedy. Mrs.. Dock Hudson, who has been ill lor some time, entered Lee County Hospital Monday for treatment. Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Lynch and small children, Joe, Herbie, Zada Faye, and Candace, were Raleigh visitors Monday. Mrs. W. B. Graham and Mrs. W. A. Muse were in Durham Satur day, for Mrs. Graham, who under went an eye operation there sev eral weeks ago, to have a check up. Mrs. A. M. Cameron accom panied them to visit her husband, who had a cataract removed early last week. He was getting along well, although still uncomfortable. N. N. McLean and J. B. Parker visited Mr. Cameron Sunday afternoon, and N. M. McKeithan of Aberdeen and Vass was also a recent caller. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Klingen- schmidt and Carol visited Mr. and Mrs. Jim McCaskill in Carthage Friday night. Mrs. Russell Bullock spoke to the Ladies Bible Class of Steele Street Methodist Church, taught by Mrs. Ben Smith, on Africa on Tuesday night of last week, show- ing many articles of interest made by - the natives and acquired by Mrs. Bullock during her 14 months’ residence in Southern Rhodesia. Mrs. S. R. Smith ac companied her to Sanford, and both were supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Smith prior to the class meeting. Julian Leslie of Greensboro vis ited his mother, Mrs. W. C. Leslie, Sunday. ]VJr. and Mrs. Edgar Mashburn and Mrs. Pete Mashburn were in Fayetteville Saturday afternoon. Misses Kate and Eva Graham of Southern Pines spent a morning last week with Mrs. G. W. Brooks. Mrs. Bertie L. Matthews and son, Franklin, had as Sunday call ers Mrs. George Barnhardt and Mr. and Mrs. Rex Kelly (Ernestine Matthews), all of Sanford, Miss “Coop” Barnhardt of Greensboro, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Paine (Ellen Matthews) and son of Boone, and Mr. and Mrs. L. B. McKeithen of Cameron. Mrs. Kelly and Mrs Paine are daughters of the late Dr. and Mrs. M. L. Matthews of Sanford and nieces of Mrs. Bertie Matthews. Mrs. W. D. McCraney returned home Sunday from Hamlet, where she had spent the week with her daughter, Mrs. A. M. Hemphill, and family. Miss Margaret McLeod of Mt Gilead and Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Wallace of Carthage visited Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Tyson Sunday afternoon. Mrs. A. M. Cameron visited her son-in-law and daughter, Maj. and Mrs. P. B. Irby, and children at Fort Bragg from Saturday until Tuesday. Mrs. T. J. Smith returned home from St. Joseph’s Hospital on Thursday of last week after un dergoing treatment for several days. Mr. and Mrs. Leon Keith and Miss Neilie Keith visited Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Byrd in Albemarle Sunday and Miss Keith remained with her sister for a longer stay. Mrs. S. R. Smith visited in the home of her sister, Mrs. W. T. Cox, in Sanford Sunday afternoon, go ing especially to see her niece and family, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Lewis, Tompiy and Rebecca, who were there fromi Accomac, Va. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Willis and children of Cary. Mrs. W. H. Keith, Miss Bessie Cameron and Mrs. G. W, Griffin joined Vick Keith and family in Sanford Sunday for a trip to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Perry (Glennie Keith) at Wake Forest, where they were guests at an out door barbecued chicken dinner. Mr. and Mrs. Steve Mallard and daughter? of Wallace were there, also. ' Mrs. T. L. McNair visited her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Peele, in Carthage Sunday night. Mr. and Mrs. Horace Mullinix and Jeanette visited Mrs. Mulli- nix’s mother, Mrs. Worth Davis, at Ophir last weekend. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Gladstone spent Saturday in Greensboro. Mrs. G. W. Brooks, Mrs. T. F. Cameron, Mrs. Bertie Matthews and Franklin Matthews were in Chapel Hill a day last week and called on Mr. and Mrs. Bright An drews.
