Mrs. McCain, a longtime leader
in State health and educational
circles, and in the Democratic
party, envisioned such leadership
as essential today in Washington,
where Republican cuts threaten
to cripple seriously the public
health program as administered
through the various state depart
ments.
“I am intesested in all pnases of
health but especially tubercu

loyalty to party principles. Mr.
Scott is a man who will never be
deluded by McCarthyism.

Their Best Color
The spring color show is ap
proaching its* peak in the Great
Smoky Mountains aijd along the
Blue Ridge Parkway in Western
North Carolina. Park Rangers say
that the showy flame azalea and
rhododendron will put on their
best color display within the next
three we^ks.
In the Mount Mitchell area,
flame azalea will continue to get
more colorful and numerous until
June 10 or thereabouts, reaching
its peak in the Craggy Gardens
section about the same time as
the purple rhododendron.
Mountain laurel is starting to
bloom at some elevations and by
next weekend there will be a
prominent display along the
Parkway above Asheville. About
May 28 the laurel in this area
should be at its peak. Higher in
the Craggies the peak should be
reached about the first week of
June.
For pure color display and spec
tacular viewing, the purple rhodo
dendron, spreading out over 600
acres of the’Craggies, puts on the
best show for nature lovers and
visitors to Western North Caro
lina. Roan Mountain has much
purple rhododendron also but
does not grow so profusely as that
in Craggy Gardens.
Generally speaking, the three
showiest flowers of Western North
Carolina, which are purple rhodo
dendron, flame azalea and moun
tain laurel, can be seen between
June 1 through June 20.

we who, so often, in our bitter
primaries, provide the ammuni

crats and their ilk.
“I am happy to be for Mr. Scott,
and feel that all those now bene-
iting from his vision and leader
ship will feel as I do.”
Mrs. McCain’s talk was one of
a series being broadcast by the
“N. C. Women for Scott” commit
tee composed of outstanding wom
en from all parts of the State. The
broadcast was carried by radio
station WEEB, Southern Pines.
Mrs. McCain, the widow of the
late Dr. Paul P. McCain, for many
years superintendent of North
Carolina tuberculosis sanatoria, is
dean of Flora Macdonald College,
Red Springs. She maintains her
residence in Southern Pines and
has a home here.
