FRIDAY. JUNE 4. 1954 THE PILOT—Souiliern Pines, North Carolina PAGE ELEVEN GRAIN STORAGE PAYS Large supplies'of grain on hand in North Carolina and the nation, plus an acute shortage of storage facilities, can drive North Caro lina harvest grain prices even lower than last year. Grain mar ket channels will fill quickly after 1952 harvest starts. Here in North Carolina, our price rise after har vest is greater than the national average and larger than storage costs. Harvest prices are often 60 to 70 cents (wheat) and 40 to 55 cents (corn) below the CCC loan level. It costs only about 40 cents per bushel to build a metal grain storage bin. CATFISH IN i>ONDS Catfish have been raised suc cessfully on a commercial basis in farm ponds. However, the most profitable ventures with this spe cies of fish have resulted from taking small fish from small streams and growing them to edible size in large farm ponds. However, the most profitable ven- The majority of catfish will not .spawn successfully in ponds. Joanne Crisp Ellert Combines Styles Of Painting In Interesting Exhibit Jeanne Crisp Ellert, the artist whose work is now on view at the Library Gallery, is a painter who seems to have found herself in the field of design and to be still grop ing toward a more abstract form of art. The res^jlt is an exhibit of much interest, satisfying to those who find modern art more or less incomprehensible and, at the same time, arousing the curiosity of more contemporary spirits with the promise of a developing talent. Mrs. Ellert, who is now com pleting two years of teaching in Fayetteville High School, under the sponsorship of the Fayetteville Art League, works on the solid foundation of a B. A. from Syra cuse University, with a major in Fine Arts. Following that came a teaching career in Williamsburg, W!ashington and, excitingly enough, Japgn, She has exhibited in Williamsburg, Washington, and in New York. RHINEHART Resid^ent Manager Consultations by appointment on Saturdays A strong feeling for design runs through all the paintings in the current exhibit, including those most recently executed. There is an understanding of values, both of color and line, a balance and symmetry. This reaches its height in the conventional designs for materials or wallpaper. The re peated pattern of pale orange lilies on a dark ground, “perhaps for a cotton evening dress,” says the artist, the same lily, in white and red, this time, in a whorl of petals to form the center of a handkerchief, the ‘‘two-tone de sign” that suggests wallpaper, these are executed with skill and, despite their repetition of motif, with a charming freedom. “Bouy- ancy” Is the word in the printed legend, and very apt it is. Particularly effective is the de sign for a silk lining, with its stylized^ animals, looping and whirling about on a white ground. Mrs. Ellert turns toward the cubistic in her “Present Day Lor- eli,” a weird, slim-faced damsel, more than capable, we would say, of luring sad sailors to destruction. In “Cafe Grinzig,” the splashy riot of color is, according to the legend, intended to suggest Bo hemia, New York City style. (The Grinzig, we are told, is the New York rendez-vous of the “Hun garian hoi-polloi”. Where they eat goulash, undoubtedly.) “Takarazuka Girls’ Opera” and “Duke Hospital Corridors” com plete the show, the two in as great contrast in effect as they are in subject matter. The flower is remarkably sug gestive of Japan in its clear cool translucent colors and a certain crisp clarity of design. We are told: “by lush, lyrical, cascading color and design the artist ex presses her feeling for the dignity and eloquence of the performers in the Japanese Girls’ Opera at Takarazuka.” The corridors at Duke, in contrast, are rigid, mat ter-of-fact. The artist strove, we are told, to capture the “well-in tegrated operation and never-end ing length of hospital corridors,” . . . “to give an effect of scoured severity.” Could be. —LEONARDO PLAY PROGRAM Plans for a full Summer xec- reation program are under way, lo begin Monday, June 14, and continuing through August 20, it was learned from Irie Leonard, whoi will again serve as director.
