Hope cemetery. A small but devoted group gath ered to witness the ceremony sponsored by local veterans’ posts and the USAF Air-Ground Opera tions school, with Brig. Gen. Pearson Menoher as main speaker The Southern Pines school band played patriotic music. After in vocation by Father Peter M. Denges of St. Anthony’s Catholic church, memorial tributes to the dead were paid by Commander Lyle D. McDonald, Jr., of the Sandhills post, American Legion, and Commander Thom McKenzie of the John Boyd post, VFW. Dr. W. C. Timmons, pastor of the Church of Wide Fellowship, gave a memorial prayer. General Menoher, former com manding general of Fort Bragg, now retired, in his brief address traced the history of this coun try’s participation in wars, and her contributions to the peace of nations. After the sounding of taps, a ceremonial decoration was held of the servicemen’s graves, with Boy Scouts placing a flag on each one, and Girl Scouts placing flow ers. Concluding prayer was by the Rev. C. V. Coveil of Emmanuel Episcopal church. The recently organized Sandhill Forestry club held a dinner meet ing at the Southern Pines Country Cliib Wednesday night of last week. It was a stag affair, featur ed by considerable shoptalk on forestry, its problems and new de velopments in the field. Most of the dozen foresters who founded the club in April were present, from several counties. The founding members are: Don Traylor, sawmill forester. South ern Pines; J. A. Matthews, South ern Pines; Clifford M. Story, CP&L, Southern Pines; W. J. Marshbum, Jr., forestry consid- tant, Rockingham; James D. Nich olson, with the Southern Pulp- wood Conservation Association, Greensboro; John D. Hill, N. C. Board of Conservation and Devel opment, Rockingham; E. V. How ell, Maxton, and H. F. Park, Cape Fear Wood Corp. ing programs marked the Vass- Lakeview commencement season, which closed with graduation ex ercises Tuesday night, at which time 18 seniors were awarded di plomas and numerous prizes were presented. Theme of the graduation pro gram was “Youth’s Hope for To morrow.” Instead of having a guest speaker, five seniors spoke. Hen nings, Vivian Ruth Matthews, Bobby Wayne Trogden, Johnny Ferguson, Peggy Willard, Virginia Taylor, Shirley Patterson, Craw ford Rollins, Hugh McDermott, John R. Davis, and James R. Thomas. Mr. McCrummen announced awards as follows: a copy of the American’s Creed to each senior as a gift from Rep. C. B. Deane; perfect attendance certificates, with gifts from the senior spon sor, Mrs. W. Mr. McCrummen, in behalf of the school, made the following awards: scholarship — history, George Baldwin; mathematics, J T. Hennings; commercial, Roy Frye; home economics, Algene Hennings; agriculture, Neill Cam eron. Also, sportsmanship, Jimmy Thomas; school spirit, Harriet Har dy; activities, Johnny Davis; salu- tatorian’s ^eal for diploma, Vivian Ruth Matthews; valedictorian’s seal, Hugh McDermott. The most coveted honor of all, that of hav ing one’s name engraved on the school’s honor plaque, went to Vivian Ruth Matthews. Mary Mac Pope, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ray Pope, and Bruce Morgan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Morgan, were senior mascots and appeared with the seniors on all occasions. “One Foot On Earth” was the title of the Class Night play, pre sented Monday night. The stage setting “out under the clouds” was especially beautiful, and the per formance was well received. Sunday night, the baccalaureate sermon was preached by the Rev. L. B. McKeithen, Jr., of Fayette ville. His challenging message to the graduates was timely for all. H. Clifton Blue of Aberdeen pre sented the speaker, and the Rev. R. L. Beal gave the invocation and benediction. Friday night, Mrs. Kate Hunter Mclnnis presented her 33 piano pupils in a recital that drew much favorable comment. The seniors presented gifts to their sponsor and to Mr. McCrum men, also a gift of $50 to be used for recreational work in the school. The music pupils gave Mrs. Huhter a gift.
