Dr. Charles Stevick
And Family Visit Here
On Way To New Station
Visiting at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. D. Wade Stevick for the past
week were Dr. and Mrs. Charles
P. Stevick of ':^emphis, Tenn.,
and their daughters, Linda and
Susan.
Dr. Stevick is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. D. W. Stevick and has re-
' cently been called to active duty-
in the United States Public Health
Service. He has been a commis
sioned officer in the Public Health
Service Reserve since 1942.
Dr. Stevick and family left
Southern Pines on May 30 for
Staten Island, N. Y., where he has
been assigned temporarily to the
Foreign Quarantine Station. He
expects to receive further orders
to proceed to Europe in the near
future for a tWo-year term of
duty. His family -will accompany
him.
Other visitors during the week
at the Stevick home were Mr. and
Mrs. Marvin Ray and sgn Andy of
Fayetteville, Mr. and Mrs. Richard
Lowish and son Mike, of Greens
boro, Mrs. Mary Lowish from In
dianapolis and Mrs. H. P. Bilyeu

Mr. And Mrs. Graham
Are Feted At Shower
In Their New Home
Mr. and Mrs. William John Gra
ham, Jr., who moved into their
new home on Valley Road about
a month and a half ago, were giv
en a miscellaneous shower Satur
day night at their home, with Mrs.
Albert Crissman and Mrs. A. V.
Autry of Vass and Mrs. G. L.
Culler of Manly as hostesses. Mrs.
Graham had been let in on the
secret, but the affair, given by
lifelong friends of Mr. Graham,
. was a complete surprise to him.
The shower consisted of many
nice gifts for the new home, in
cluding several pieces of silver in
their pattern.
The hostesses served homemade
, cake and coca-colas.

Mrs. Graham is the former Miss
Martha Moore of Welch, W. Va.
She was employed as a physical
therapist at McQuire Hospital in
Richmond, Va., to which Mr. Gra
ham was transferred from a Cali
fornia hospital for treatment fol
lowing injuries sustained in an
automobile accident while he was
stationed on the west coast during
service in the Army. They were
married several weeks before
coming to occupy their new home
here.
Group Meets At Civic
Club Friday For Games
A group met at the Civic Club
last Friday and spent an enjoyable
afternoon playing games. High
score winners in bridge were:
Mrs, Willie Wilson, Mrs. Hugh
Betterley, Mrs. Arthur Clark, Mrs.
J. Di Sitterson, Mrs. C. A. Foss,
Mrs. G. W. Buchholz, and Mrs. F.
M. Thompson, Mrs. Sam Richard
son won in canasta, and Mrs. W.
C. Timmons was samba winner.
Fred Brindley and L. E. Grover
were winners at the men’s table
in the directors’ room.
Mrs. Everett Walker received
the door prize.
Rev. and Mrs. Price
Of Utah Visit Here
The Rev. Hampton E. Price of
Clearfield, Utah, accompanied by
his wife, was in town Monday,
looking over the town and renew
ing friendships formed during the
year and a half that he spent in
Southern Pines while employed
by the Carolina Power and Light
Company, whose service he left
in 1929. He called on C. G. Coun
cil and Mrs. Thomas Vann, both
of whom were fellow workers.
After leaving Southern Pines,
Mr. Price attended Andover New
ton Theological School near New
ton Center, Mass., and upon com
pletion of his studies in 1936 be
gan a ministry that kept him in
Boston five and a half years and
in Ashland, seven. He has been
in Clearfield, Utah, for the past
five years, and is pastor of the
Community Baptist Church there.
He and Mrs. Price have fO'ur
children, girls 11 years and 17
months of age, and boys eight and
six. They are visiting his people
in Hartsville, S. C., and plan to
go to New York to visit Mrs.
Price’s relatives.
This was Mr. Price’s first visit
here in eight years, and he was
greatly impressed with the growth
of the town.

To Plan Activities
For New Club Year
The executive committee of the
Sandhill Business and Profession
al Woman’s Club held a meeting
Tuesday night at the home of the
president, Mrs. Nancye McClellan,
to formulate plans for the new
club year which will begin June
22.
Two major projects were deci
ded upon: the sponsoring of the
educational campaign of the
American Cancer Society in this
community, and the collecting
from club members of clothing
and household linens for distribu
tion through the County Welfare
Department.
Up for consideration, also, was
Business Women’s Week, observ
ed annually in October. The club
hopes to have occasional spots on
the radio devoted to Business
Women.
Preliminary planning for the
district conference to be held here
in October was done.
At the conclusion of their
“work,” the women relaxed over
raspberry ice cream and cookies.

Highlighting events of June, the
traditional month of weddings,
will be that of Miss Dorothy Lee
Saunders of Southern Pines and
Robert Owen Southwell of Rome,
Ga., which will be solemnized at
8 o’clock tomorrow (Saturday)
evening at Brownson Memorial
Presbyterian Church. The Rev.
Cheves K. Ligon, pastor of the
church, will officiate, and Mrs.
George Frye of Robbins will pre
sent the wedding music.
Miss Saunders is the daughter
of William Preston Saunders and
the late Elizabeth Plohk Saunders
of Southern Pines. The bride
groom-elect is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. W. O. Southwell of Rome,
The bride, who will be given in
marriage by her father, will have
her sister, Mrs. Ralph Barnhart,
of Raeford as matron of honor,
and Elizabeth Barnhart will be
her aunt’s flower girl. Tommy
Hager, cousin of the bride, will be
ring bearer. Miss Billie Jean Mc-

Bird Club Has
Largest List Yet
The Southern Pines Bird Club
has a record list of birds seen in
North Carolina since January of
this year. Miss Louise Haynes,
club secretary, discloses. At pres
ent the number of varieties stands
at exactly 100, and more are add
ed each month.

Mr. and Mrs. Struthers Burt,
after spending the winter here
left Monday night for Philadel

about two weeks before going to
their ranch in Wyoming for the
summer. They plan to^return to
Southern Pines in October.
Mrs. McCain Here For
Month Before Going
Abroad; Brings Guest
Mrs. P. P. McCain, dean of Flora
Macdonald College, came home
Monday night to remain until the
last of June, when she and Miss
Elinor Valentine plan to go
abroad for five weeks. Mrs. Mc
Cain had as her overnight guest
a 1954 graduate of Flora Macdon
ald, Miss Saradee Davis of Quin-
cey, Fla., who is to become di
rector of religious education at
,Brownson Memorial Presbyterian
Church the first of July. Miss
Davis left Tuesday afternoon.
Mrs. Buck Is Hostess
To Altar Society;
Mrs. Arnold Honored
Mrs. Rose Buck was hostess to
St. Anthony’s Altar Society at its
June meeting, held Tuesday at her
home oh Valley Road with around
10 members attending. Mrs. Mary
Sharp, president, conducted the
meeting.
Members carried their handi
craft along and needles clicked as
they worked* on articles for thejr
fall bazaar, plans for which were
formulated at this meeting. The
president named committees for
the various booths and tables.
At the conclusion of the work-
discussion period, the group hon
ored Mrs. Richard Arnold with a
layette shower of many dainty
gifts, for which she expressed her
thanks.
The hostess as assisted by her
daughter, Mrs. John Hunnejnan,
in serving refreshments.

have had as their guests their son-

who came here from Augusta, Ga.
The Strodes will visit in his boy
hood home in Amherst, Va., then
go to New York, from where they
will sail on June 8 for Puerto
Rico, where Colonel Strode will
command Rodriguez Army Hospi-
al.

Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Brown mov-'
ed into the ir new home on Coun
try Club Drive last weekend and
had as their guest for the weekend
their granddaughter, Robin
Brown of Norfolk, Va.
Mr. Brown a railroad employee
with headquarters in Virginia,
plans to retire next fall, at which
time he will come here to live.
Mrs. Brown has for some time
been living in Manly with her
sister, Mrs. A. W. McNeill, and
teaching a school for tots at the
McNeill home. She will spend the
summer in Virginia, then return
to the new home upon her hus
band’s retirement.

three-day convention of the State
Federation of Business and Pro
fessional Women’s Clubs being
held in Charlotte this weekend.
Attending with her are Miss
Genevieve Moore of Aberdeen,
past president of the local organ
ization, and Miss Eliza Collins of
Aberdeen.
Outing At Aberdeen
Lake Marks Closing
Of Mrs. Brown’s School
Mrs. R. P. Brown’s school closed
last Friday with an outing at
Aberdeen Lake frbm 10:30 to
12:30, attended by around 28 chil
dren and about as many mothers.
The children enjoyed the
swings, slides and other equip
ment on the playground and some
went in the lake before noon, and
all were ready for the bounteous
picnic lunch that had been provi
ded.
Mrs. Brown plans to direct the
kindergarten at Brownson Mem
orial Presbyterian Church next
fall.
Water from Jordan
River Is Used To
Christen Babies
Two little cousins, Robert Terry
Overton and Thomas Wayne
Klabbatz, were baptized with
water from the Jordan River in
christening ceremony at the
Church of Wide Fellowship at
6:30 p. m. on Wednesday of last
week. The pastor. Dr. W. C. Tim
mons, officiated.
Robert Terry is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. T. T. Overton, and
Thomas Wayne’s parents are
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Klabbatz.
Mrs. Overton and Mr. Klabbatz;
are sister and brother.
After the christening, Mr. and
Mrs. J. T. Overton, grandparents
of Robert Terry, entertained the
group at dinner, Guests were the
two babies and their parents,
Sandy Overton, Mr. and Mrs. Carl
Li. Klabbatz, Dr. and Mrs. Tim
mons, Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Jessup
of Concord, B. L. Jessup, Jr., of
Ellerbe and Concord, and R. P.
Lyon of Wadesboro. Mrs. Jessup
is Robert Terry’s great-aunt, a
sister of Mrs. J. T. Overton.
The christening took place on
the birthday of Robert Terry’s pa
ternal grandmother. His sister,
Sandy, was christened on the
birthday 6f her maternal grand
mother.

Last Sunday, six foursomes of
Pinedodgers and partners spent an
enjoyable day with golf, a deli
cious dinner and entertainment.
Mrs. Leo Walper showed movies
of the Pinedodgers, taken on a
spring day.

linocket on Tuesday. Attending
Mrs. McMullen was Mrs. John C.
Ostrom of Southern Pines.
Mrs. Kennedy is the daughter of
Mrs. Harry M. Vale and the late
Mr. Vale, of Southern Pines. Mr.
Kennedy is a brother of Kenneth
C. Kennedy, Pinehurst realtor.
After a summer at Mr. Ken
nedy’s fishing ' camp near Milli
nocket, he and his wife will make

week’s Florida vacation, a part
of which was spent at Vero Beach.

residents, who are pleasantly situ
ated at Eau Gaille, between two
rivers and surrounded by citrus
fruit trees of various kinds.

Gets Degree From Duke
Miss Rosemsiry Dundas, daugh
ter of Mrs. John Dundas of Valley
Road and the late Mr. Dundas,
will graduate from Duke Univer
sity in exercises early next week.
She was president of the Kappa
Kappa Gamma sorority during her
senior year. Mrs. Dundas will at
tend the graduation.
