Faces Trial On
Whiskey Charges
Claude D. Cagle, 28, a native of
Carthage now living in Sanford,
was arrested about 10:30 p. m.
last Friday by ABC and Federal
officers while transporting 12 gal
lons of illicit whiskey.

Federal Alcoholic Control Officers
George Yutzy and J. L. Nifong,
from Rockingham.
Officers reported that, when he
was asked by Officer Marks if he
had liquor in the car, Cagle quick
ly handed him the key to the rear
baggage compartment of the auto,
where the whiskey was conceal
ed.
In a hearing before U. S. Com
missioner J. A. Lang at Carthage,
$500 bond was set and Cagle was
bound over to the September term
,of Federal court at Rockingham,
I charged with possession of and j
transporting illegal whiskey.

to many was given a pre-birthday
surprise Sunday in celebration of
her 80th birthday, which came on
Tuesday. Her daughter-in-law,
Mrs. Ray Griffin, engineered the
feat. ■'
Mf. and Mrs; Vernon Moore
(Doris Thompson) and children,
ianice, Vernon and Raymond, of
Charleston, S. C., came up Friday
to visit until Sunday. Sunday
morning members of the family
took Mrs. Griffin to ride and kept
her ,away until around noon.
When she entered the house, a
crowd of relatives greeted her
with “Happy Birthday” in song
and ushered her into the dining
room where a sumptuous picnic
dinner had been spread. She was
bedecked with a corsage and
showered with many nice gifts.

meet with Mrs. W. A. Muse to
night (Friday) at 8 o’clock.
Bible ^hool '
A daily Vacation Bible School
is being held this week at the
Presbyterian Church under spon
sorship of the Presbyterian and
Methodist Churches. Opening day
enrollment was around 60 pupils,
with 14 or 15 workers in charge.
Former Pastor Returning
The Rev. Walter Smith, Duke
Divinity School student who
served the Vass Methodist Church
several months last year, has been
assigned to the church to succeed
the Rev. E. C. Boulton, who left
last week to join the Iowa confer
ence. Mr. Smith will be here this
Sunday and will conduct an 11 a.
m. service, to which the public
is invited.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Smith made
many friends during their stay
here last year, and his return is
highly pleasing to the Methodist
congregation.
He plans to attend summer
school, but will be here every
weekend.
Rainbow Club Meets
The Rainbow Home Demonstra
tion Club met last week at the
home of Mrs. J. B. Parker. Miss
Flora McDonald gave a lesson on
table settings. There were 19 pres
ent, including one visitor, Mrs.
Ora Thomspon. A refreshment
period followed the lesson.
Off To Camp
A number of boys and girls left
Monday for 4-H camp at Swan-
nanoa. In the group were Butch]
Griffin, Leon Keith, Judy Cam
eron, Joanne Brewer, Dana
Thomas, Mary Lynn Oldham. Eu-
la Mae Blue and Ann and Joe Ed
wards.
Faiher-Ston Celebration
H. W. Lynch and his five-year-
old son, Herbie, were feted at a
birthday dinner at the Lynch
home last Sunday. Each had a
decorated birthday cake, and one
of the guests brought a third.

Saturday, June 5. After a short
trip the couple are now in Vass.

of Cameron High School. The
bridegroom formerly attended
