THE PILOT—Soulhern Pines, North Carolina FRIDAY, JUNE 11, 1954 Robeson County Home Clubs Cooperate In Setting Up Guest Wing At Hospital * _ 1 4.: An achievement by cooperative working of Home Demonstration I ghgiyes, and closets. Rolling up clubs of Robeson County resulted | their sleeves, the women went to il.. , rr,, i 1 - in the opening, in May, of a guest wing of the State Cancer Institute When the patients’ rela tives come to visit, these visitors have been put to great deal of in convenience because the Institute, a nursing home, is at a distance from Lumberton; the visitors fre quently go to great sacrifice to make the trip to the institute and the financial burden of a stay is great. A spokesman for the Home D’emonstration Clubs said, “It seemed only right since the Can cer Institute is in Robeson Coun ty that women of the county- should provide shelter for those who came to visit loved ones.” The nursing home is financed by the State Division of the Ameri can Cancer Society and County Welfare Departments, with the help of many county cancer units of the Society, but this program of providing hospitality presented a challenge to Robesonians. One wing of the building, leas ed to the Institute but not in use, was chosen for the project. The renovation presented a real chal lenge to the Home Demonstration Clubs, but the clubs of all races— White, Negro, and Indian—accept ed the challenge and set to work to prepare a certain number of suites of rooms for each race. Many years ago the building was used for the County Home and the rooms of the building were cluttered with odds and ends of old furniture, beds, dressers. work. The White clubs tooks over their portion and determined to set up three bedrooms, a bath room, and a kitchenette; a recep tion room was also in the plans. The Negro and Indian clubs each settled on a reception room, two bedrooms, and a bath. A general fund fi^om the three- races representing these clubs supplied money for necessary ren ovation and decoration and for plumbing and electrical wiring. Linen showers were announced and all necess^y items were sup- g)lied in generous amounts. A hot plate and shelves for china and a few pots and pans were installed. With this equipment it will be possible for over-night guests to prepare breakfast and thus be en abled to make a longer visit with their loved ones. The first week of May was Na tional Home Demonstration Week and how better could it have been observed than by completing their project of providing a comfortable and cheerful home, away from home, for people with very ill loved ones? With Mrs. Jack Oliver as chair man for this project, the working committee includes Miss Hilda Clontz, Miss Mary Jane Gresham, Mrs. Helen Sampson, Miss Mollie Hughes, Mrs. Alma Bacote and Miss Rosa Worley, home demon stration staffs for the three club groups. iiiii.— RIDGE STRAIGHT BOHRBON WHISKEY NOW 5 YEARS OLD I «210 >I«AIOHT BOURBON »o.» 111 ABERDEEN By CATHERINE McN.
