The paintings were obtained for exhibition from the State Art Gal lery at Raleigh, to which they were sent last year by the chief of the board of education in the Jap anese province of Wakoyoma to help introduce Japanese civiliza tion to the American people. The paintings were shown first at Raleigh and are now available for exhibition in galleries, schools, libraries and other responsible in stitutions of the State. The 14 pictures include oil paintings, watercolors, and prints and cover a variety of subjects — one portrait in watercolor, three seaside scenes, an inland land scape and several decorative sub jects. The Japanese exhibition, ex- CinemaScope To Make Debut At pected to last several weeks, is variation from the shows, mostly by local artists and lasting two weeks each, that have been held continuously at the library gallery since last summer. Further plans for the library gallery will be an- Inounced later in the summer. There are still three days left of M-G-M’s masterly musical com edy, “Student Prince” in Cinema- Scope, Stereophonic &und and beautiful Ansco Color at the Car olina Theatre this Thursday, Fri day and Saturday, June 24-26, at 8:15 p. m., with a Saturday mati nee at 3. The superb singing by the “in visible” star, Mario Lanza, whose recording of the songs by the Stu dent Prince are used, the delight ful Sigmond Romberg music, the spectacular sequences and some especially fine and appealing act ing make this production an au dience “natural.” Such happiness, such soul-stir ring love songs, such rapture of carefree student days are beauti ful to hear and behold. Ann Blyth is the barmaid; Ed mund Purdom, handsome young star, is the prince. He kisses with his own lips but sings with the glorious voice of Mario Lanza. Patrons will be enthralled by the immortal music and by the panoramic sweep of the plot on the Cinemascope screen. Harold Buckminster Preaches At Culdee A taut, exciting melodrama about the intrigue that goes on almost every day between East and West Berlin and the powder- keg for danger it represents, ccmes to the Carolina Theatre the entire week tof June 27 at 8:15 p. m., with matinees Sunday, Tuesday and Saturday at 3 p. m. It is the Cinemascope produc tion with Stereophonic Sound and Technicolor, “Night People,” with Gregory Peck, Broderick Craw ford, Anita Bjork, and Rita Gam who, with a large supporting cast and complete production unit, went to Germany where the en tire picture was filmed. Played in the actual locale of the story and with such outstand ing landmarks as the Branden burg Gate, Under Den Linden, the burned out Reichstag Build ing, the bunker in the Chancel lery where Hitler and Eva Braun met their deaths, the fire-gutted Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, and street scenes along Berlin’s most fashionable street, Kurfurs- tendam. The tense story revolves around the intrigues that ensue when a young American corporal is kid napped from the western zone by the Russians, who seek to ex change the young man for a want ed elderly German couple. Fine performances are turned in by the entire cast, but the out standing one is delivered by Gregory Peck as a dynamic Amer ican colonel in counter-intelli gence who despises political red- tape and influence and who out wits the Russians at their own game in negotiating the return of the kidnapped soldier. True, Cinemascope and Techni color add to the feature’s excel lence but the subject’s mainstays are a solid story, abounding in spine-tingling suspense; superla tive performances by a hand-pick ed cast; and authentic mountings. It reflects a triple triumph for Nunnally Johnson, who scripted, produced and directed it, and rates as one of the most lavishly praised films of this or any other year. News of the resignation of Ed Bender as recreation director of Sanford, after having filled the position for the past six years, was received with regret by the people of Sanford, it was reported from that community this week. Bender resigned at a special meeting of the Sanford Recreation Comimission. A resolution was adopted by the commission commending Ben der for his work in the city and another motion was approved naming a three-man committee to investigate the possibilities of ob taining a new director. Bender has been instrumental in putting over many worth-while things since he took charge of the recreational department. He has been untiring in his efforts to build up the town and community in providing entertainment for both young and old. Bender’s wife is the former Mary Alice Tate of Southern Pines. He is well known here, having played tennis on local courts frequently. He won the Sandhills Open Tennis Tourna ment singles trophy the first year that this event, now known as the Sandhills Invitational Tourna ment, was played here. The Rev. Harold Buckminster, of Greenwich, Conn., son of Mrs. James Howe who has . a home “Shadow Lawn,” at Pinehurst, conducted services at Culdee the Murdocksville Pinehurst, Sunday Church on Road, near morning. Culdee Church is now without a regular pastor. The Rev. Mr. Buckminster is pastor af a church at Greenwich. He lived in Pine hurst as a child and attended school there.
