THE PILOT, Southern Pines, North^arolma^ FRIDAY, AUGUST 27, 1954 PAGE TEN PREPARE LAND NOW Good Pasture Is Key To Success With Livestock By JOHN A. DINAN Assistant County Agent Pasture grasses and clovers are the cheapest and most nutriUous feed we can give livestock. H^Sh quality meat and milk can be produced economically on perma^ pent pasture if a sufficient amount of pasture is provided, Jiowever, most livestock produc ers have a tendency to under plant and overgraze their pasture which gets them into trouble and , especially in dry summers such as this one. , Dry summers are a big 'prob lem, it is true, but there is an answer to the problem; and farm ers who follow good pasture man agement practices will be the ones who will make money -o-ut of their livestock. With the cost- price squeeze facing farmers these days, it is necessary to get every pound of meat and milk • from our livestock that is pos It is just as important that these products be produced at the lowest cost in order to- make a profit. Pasture is the answer low-cost production, but only when enough of the right kind of pasture is provided for our ani- xLre are a few simple rules which we can go by to increase livestock profits m this section of North Carolina through the use of pasture. First, select a pas ture plant that will grow well on the type of soil which y^ have (Ladino Clover and Orchard Grass are not adapted to sandy soils); second, allow a newly- seeded pasture to become well es tablished with five or SIX inches of growth before turmng inimals on it to graze. Young Pastures can be ruined by grazing too early; third, plant enough pasture for the number of animals you intend to graze—two acres per cow is a minimum to insure good is the time to prepare your land for seeding pasture and aL crops for winter and early spring grazing. -Small gram crops provide excellent winter grazing Ind can be cut for hay if not needed in the spring. Don’t let dry weather catch you unprepared next year—seed plen ty of permanent pasture now. CARTHAGE ! By MRS. ALONZO BLUE Visitors Honored Mrs A. B. McPherson and daughter.
