Alter several progressions scores were tallied and hign prize awarded to Mrs. Mack Wicker. The hostess served nuts and tea during play and a frozen salad with an iced drink at the conclu sion of play. Brief Mention Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Harrington and Dr. and Mrs. Harold Johnson and children have returned home after spending several days last week on the coast. Miss Betsy Farrell i^ at home after undergoing treatment at Moore County Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. John McQuire of Savannah, Ga., are spending sev eral days visiting relatives. Mr. and Mrs. V. U. Grose and son Victor spent the weekend in the western part of the state. Mr. and Mrs. Wimberely Bow man of Raeford spent Monday with friends and relatives here. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Farrell and family of Tuscaloosa, Ala., have returned home after visiting relatives here. Mrs. Jim Pittman of Chapel TTin spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Herring, Sr. Francis Pleasants, Robert Wil son and Johnny Sloan returned to Norfolk, Va., Monday after spending the weekend with rela tives. Sonny Guion, who is stationed at San Diego, Calif., is spending a 30-day leave with his father. Dr. C. L. Guion. Mr. and Mrs. M. N. Sugg visited in Chapel Hill Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Sykes and son of Raleigh were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Sykes. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Watson, Miss Margie Garner, and Russ Walton spent the weekend at White Lake. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Koontz and son of Portsmouth, Va., spent the weekend with relatives here. Jackson Smith is visiting his parents for a few days before re porting back for duty in Calif ornia. Mr. and Mrs. Klay Box of Charlotte were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. T. S. Melvin and Miss June Melvin. Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Holden and family. Miss Margaret and Ginny Faye Farrell and George and Frank Farrell spent the weekend in the western part of the state. Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Norris are spending this week w'lth relatives in Portsmouth, Va., and Wilming ton. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Hinkle and daughter and Jimmy Bishop spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Bishop. Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Melvin, Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Melvin, Jr., and family spent the weekend at Ocean Drive, S. C. Eighth District Rally Set 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12 Barbecue Planned After Democratic Event At Sanford Mrs. Vining, 82, Succumbs Here Mrs. Leah H. Vining, 82, died Wednesday morning at the Anch orage Convalescent Home, E. Massachusetts Ave., where she had been a patient for about a year. A native of Georgia, Mrs. Vin ing had lived at Hamlet for a number of years before coming to the convalescent home here. She had been an invalid for the past 10 years. Funeral services were to be held at Hart’s Funeral Home, Macon, Ga., with burial at Macon. Funer al plans were incomplete when information was given to The Pilot by members of the fatnily Wednesday. ' Mrs. Vining is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Jewell Clements and Mrs. H. D. Martin, of Hamlet; Congressman Charles B. Deane of the Eighth N. C. Congression al District this week announced further plans for the 1954 Eighth District Democratic rally to be held at the Lee County Court house in Sanford on Tuesday October 12, at 2 p. m. Mr. Deane and the new State Democratic Chairman John D Larkins, Jr., have worked Out an interesting program for the rally which is expected to officially launch the Democratic fall cam paign in the 12 counties of the Eighth District, Anson, Davidson Davie, Hoke, Lee Montgomery Moore, Richmond, Scotland Union, Wilkes and Yadkin. The Sanford rally will be one of the 12 Congressional rallies sponsored during the 1954 fall campaign by the State Demo cratic Executive Committe throughout the State. The San ford event will feature talks by the Democratic leaders of the State including the State Chair man and the Democratic nomi nees for the two United States Senate posts and for State offi ces. Governor Umstead is ex pected to attend and address the gathering. Mr. Deane has notified the Democratic chairman in each county of the District concerning the plans for the Sanford rally and has urged each of them to see that a large delegation of Dem ocratic leaders and workers come to this event. W. Lament Brown of Southern Pines, Moore Demo cratic chairman, has urged at tendance by party members in this county. The Lee County Democratic Executive Committee, with Ralph Monger, Jr., of Sanford as chair man, will act as the host for the rally and will see that all in at tendance have a successful time. Plans are underway for a bar becue to follow the Rally. Mrs. Will Butler of Hoffman and Mrs. J. C. Holloway of Macon, Ga.; and three sons, J. M. Vinin'g and A. M. Vining, of Raleigh, and Jack L. Vining of West Hartford, Conn.; and a sister, Mrs. Minnie L. Hugeley of Atlanta, Ga.
