The tremendous audiences which already have seen “The Robe” will certainly be most re ceptive to this film and they will not be disappointed in this sequel which reaches a certain maturity of perfection. Absent are some of the understandable technical flaws of the lirst CinemaScope picture. Especially noticeable will be the refinement and the toning down of the Sterephonic Sound which was so rich in quality in “7 Brides for 7 Brothers” just seen at the Carolina. “Demetrius and the Gladiators” will hold the screen at the Carolina Sunday through Wednesday, October 17 20, at 8:15 p. m., with matinees Sunday and Wednesday at 3. AUDOIN, PA & FRESNO, CALIF, After 13 years at his home studio, MGM, Spencer Tracy was finally lured away to play the role of a rugged, hard-driving rancher in “Broken Lance,” Twentieth Century-Fox’s Cine maScope drama of the great southwest in the 1880’s, which comes to the Sunrise Theatre on Sunday. Although the surround ings were different Tracy’s posi tion as respected dean of Holly wood stars was the same with all of the “Broken Lance” troupe. Tracy attacked his role with characteristic authority. It was not difficult from the artistic standpoint, although physically it made more serious demands than anything he has done in a long time. From the physical stand point it was the same for his co- stars in the picture, Robert Wag ner, Jean Peters and Richard Widmark. An experienced horseman and former polo player, Tracy never theless went into training for a month with the roan gelding he rode in the picture, hardening himself in the process. When it came time for him to ride -'‘hell and leather” over the rugged Santa Cruz valley in Arizona, he was ready. He did a lot. of danger ous riding, including a fall from his horse. He suffered some scratches and severe bruises in the fall and risked much mere serious hurts at other'times, but the penetra ting eye of the CinemaScope cam eras makes arduous demands on actors these days. There was a time when doubles could be used but not now with the enlarged screen technique. Revival Services To Start Monday The Rev. W. H. Caldwell of North Wilkesboro will deliver the message each evening at a revival to start Monday at 7:30 p.m., at Rosendale Baptist Church, with services to continue each evening throughout the week at the same hour. The church is on the old Sweet heart Lake road, two miles east of the Skyline Service Station on No. 1 highway, four miles north of Southern Pines. All singers are especially invit ed to attend the services, said the Rev. Lester English, pastor of the church, in announcing the revival. Only about one out of every five persons in North Carolina 65 years of age or over receives old age assistance, according to studies of the State Board of Public Welfare. The older an eld erly person is, the more likely he is to be dependent upon Others for help.
