Representative — Telephone Vass 2171 Mrs. Crabtree Honored Mrs. Bobby Crabtree, an Eng lish bride of a few months, was honored at a miscellaneous show er at the Community House in Vass Saturday night when Mrs. Guy Robinson of Lakeview en tertained for her. The hostess pre sented the honoree an aster cor sage upon arrival, and after con tests had been enjoyed she was given the shower gifts, which she displayed. The refreshment table was cov ered with a lace cloth and held a floral arrangement. Sandwiches, potato chips, cookies, candy and a drink were served. Out-of-town guests were Mrs. Robinson of Concord, mother-in-law of the Mrs. Edward McNair and son Ronnie of Charlotte were at home last week. Mr. and Mrs. Dock McRae and daughter, Carolyn, of Southern Pines were Sunday supper guests of Mrs. B. C. McRae. Mrs. A. D. McLauchlin, and Mrs. Charles Loup of Southern Pines are spending the week at Myrtle Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Morgan ex pect to move into their new home , , - . this week. Shower Honoree Mrs. Bobby Lee Lassiter was given a surprise linen shower Sat urday night by Mrs. Jesse Coore and Mrs. Wilford Lassiter, at the home of Mrs. Coore. Mr. and Mrs. Lassiter have just moved into their new home, off Lobelia Road. Mrs. Lassiter received many nice gilts, which she gratefully acknowledged. The hostesses served sandwich es, potato chips, cookies and Coke. Mrs. Johnny Lassiter of Cam eron was the only out-of-town guest. and Mrs. Bernice Turner, of An sonville, Mrs. Morgan’s mother and aunt, have been visiting them for a few days. Cameron McLean of Greens boro spent two days last week Mrs. C. P. McMillan, who has been a member of the Vass-Lake- view school faculty for several years, first as fifth grade teacher and recently as second-third com bination, has accepted third grade work in the St. Clair School in Sanford for the coming year. PJC Board Will Elect 8 Trustees For New College SHung By Bees Max Edwards, while working with his bees last Friday alter noon, was stung on one eyelid and about the eye to the extent that he became ill and was taken to Moore County Hospital. His eye was badly swollen, but he was able to return home Satur day afternoon. Vass Lions Cliib Cpl. M. L. Parvin of Carthage spoke to the Vass Lions Club on “Slow Down and Live” at the reg ular meeting held last week at Hotel Lakeview. He was intro duced by Charles Ray Pope, who was in charge of the program. Lion President John Alex Smith presided over the business session. ^4 Celebrates Birthday Mike Hudson, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. (Dutch) Hudson, cele brated his third birthday with a party on Tuesday of last week. The children played and Mike was presented gifts. At refresh ment time all eyes centered on the choo-choo train birthday cake. Guests were Cathy Coe, Stevie and Linda Frye, Gary Hudson, Jackie Danley, and Deborah How ell. Injured In Wreck Mrs. 'Thurlow Evans received word Saturday that her brother, Dewey Thompson of Orlando, Fla., had been seriously ihjured in an I automobile accident. She joined her mothen Mrs. Ora Thompson of Salem, N. J., on a train Mon day morning to go to Florida. Personeds Mr. and Mrs. Ray Griffin and sons, Butch and Mike, went to Albemarle Sunday and brought Mrs. G. W. Griffin home after a visit there. Mrs. B. F. Griffin was in St. Joseph’s Hospital from Friday until Sunday for examination and observation Mr. and Mrs. H. C. CaUahan and Mr. and Mrs. Mack Callahan and family went to Laurinburg Sunday because of the death of their aunt, Mrs. Dora Jones, who died in a hospital there. Funeral services were held Monday after noon at the Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen. Mrs. James Yow and children, Teresa apd Sherry, of Rocking ham spent 'Thursday with Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Smith. Mr. and Mrs. John H. Rosser and children, Ann, John, Jr., and ^ Robert, of Charlotte were Sunday guests of Mrs. R. G. Rosser. Miss Carlotta Maples of Car thage was the weekend guest of her aunt, Mrs. Ray Griffin, and family. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Musten of Kernersville spent Monday night at their apartment in the home of Miss Bessie Cameron, and on Tuesday moved their household ^ furnishings to Kernersville, where they have purchased a Tiome. Mr. Musisn was coach in the Vass-Lakeview High School last year. Mrs. Bob Perry of Wake Forest spent the weekend with her mother, Mrs. W. H. Keith. Vick Keith of Sanford joined them for the day Sunday and Mr. and Mrs. Linwood Keith and son, Joe, came an afternoon visit. W* Mrs. C. C. Council of Cameron spent a day last week with her sister, Mrs. T. L. McNair. Mr. and The election of eight trustees from Presbyterian Junior College, who will serve with the eight trustees elected b^ the Synod of North Carolina, the eight already elected by Flora Macdonald Col lege, and the eight to be elected by Peace College—to constitute the new board of trustees of the consolidated Presbyterian colleges in eastern North Carolina — will take place at a called meeting of the Board of Trustees of Presby terian Junior College, which will be held in the college administra tion building on Tuesday, August 16, at 11:30 a.m. The meeting has been called by the chairman of the Board of Presbyterian Junior College, Ed win Pate of Laurinljurg. The combined board of trustees for the new consolidated institu tion will choose the site for the college. Southern Pines is invit ing the college to come here and a tract of land for a campus on Weymouth Heights has been of fered by Mrs. James Boyd. By F. D. ALLEN Assistant Farm Agent This year’s broiler show was much better thap last year. There were 184 broilers entered in the show. The quality of the birds was much bfetter than last year. We would like to express our ap preciation to all who had a part in making his show a success. The first place winners were: Pugh Poultry Co., Ramseur; Char lie Kennedy, Highfalls; Chester McLendon, Ellerbe; Pugh Poultry Chisholm, Woodford Moore, Jackson Springs; George WiUiams, Star. The third place winners were: Colon McFayden, Ellerbe; Wayne Powers, Siler City; Robert Mc Fayden, Ellerbe; Harold McFay den, Ellerbe; Edison Powers, Ben nett; Henry Overton, Jackson Springs. Five hundred people were giv en a free fried chicken dinner at the show. 4-H Poultry Show The 4-H Poultry Show was also held Saturday at the HighfaUs School. Davis, Box 64, Route 2, Seagrove; Burgwyn Fields, Star Route, Carthage; Norma Ann Fields, Star Route, Carthage; Dix ie Kelly, Route 2, CartHage; Don Matthews, Route 3, Carthage; William Oakley, Route 2, Camer on; Carol Pilson, Route 1, Cam eron; Carolyn Rogers, Route 2, Carthage; Johnny Wicker, Route 2, Carthage. Red Ribbon — Sandra Cagle, Route 3, Carthage; Grady Patter- son. Box 132, Route 2, Vass White Ribbon—^Paul Cummings, Route 2, Box 52, Vass; Stella Mae Robson, Pinehurst. The above list shows that there were 12 blue ribbon winners who received $10 each and two red ribbon winners who received $8 each; and two white ribbon win ners who received 100 pounds of feed each. The birds were sold at auction following the show for an average of $2.35 per bird. This was the best 4-H pullet show we have had and we would like to thank all who helped make it a success. WITH THE ARMED FORCES Aj3C James B. Hatch is home visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. V. Hatch, having completed a course in the USAF Communica tions Center Specialist School at Cheyenne, Wyo. He will report to Manhattan Beach, Long Island, N. Y., Sep tember 1. From there he will be sent to Saudi Arabia where he will be with the 194£th American Airways Communications System as a teletype operator. A 1954 graduate of Southern Pines High School, A|3C Hatch enlisted in the Air Force last Jan uary.
