i <> € 4 THURSDAY, MAY 3, t956 Tennesseean Wins 56th North-South Amateur Tourney Hillman Robbins, a Memiphis, Tenn., automobile salesman and 1954 National Collegiate golf champion, defeated Bill Hynd- man of Abington, Pa., 1-up to win in the finals of the 56th North-South Amateur played over the No. 2 course at Pine- hurst Saturday. Robbins, who goes into service June 1, dropped a five-foot putt on the 36th and final hole to match a bogey five by Hyndman to win the tournament, played before fairly large crowds all week. Hyndman, who was defeated in the fin^s of the 1955 U. SI Ama teur by Harvey Ward, showed signs of tiredness over the tough 7,000 yard course. He had only three birdies in the entire 36 holes finals. His tee shot on the 34th hole hooked and hit a spectator, John Zelie of Pinehurst, and un nerved him for the rest of the match, although he paired the short 35th to put him only one down. Robbins had defeated North Carolinian Billy Joe Patton in the semi-finals, and W. C. Campbell, 1955 captain of the Walker Cup tearw, in the quarter finals. In earlier matches he defeated F. S. Souchak and R. L. Pittman. Hyndman defeated Jake How ard of Augusta, Ga., youngest player in the tournament, in the semi-finals, and Dave Smith in the quarter-finals. Earlier he had defeated D. M. Weiland and W. Jackson. The toumaimnt, oldest amateur in the country, was started in 1901. Kraffert Wins Pine Needles Seniors Golf Tournament Benjamin Kraffert, of “Southern | Pines, North-South Seniors cham pion, added another title to his I growing list Sunday when he won the first annual Pine Needles Country Club’s Seniors Invitation- | al by nine strokes. Kraffert, with a two handicap, I had rounds of 69, 73 and 76 to win in class “C”. After the second round he led by 10 strokes over 1 his nearest competitors, Allen Rankin, Western Seniors titlehold-1 er, John McGuire, Indiana Sen iors champion, and Ray Robeson, j past Western Seniors champion. Other winners in various age I groups were Frank Pingree of | Montreal, Canada, with 269, win ner of class “A”; Allen Rankin, of I Columbus, Ohio, with 227, winner of class “B”; and Harold Collins I of Southern Pines, with 231, win ner of class “D”. Others playing from this areal were Harry Pethick, Jack F. Car ter, D. L. Joscelyn and Curtis Townshend, all of Southern Pines, and Donald Cook and C. 1 Williams oh Pinehurst. Warren Bell, manager of the I ■' club, said the tournament was quite successful and that it would become a regular part of the | club’s seasonal activity. Forty players participated.
