13th Straight By
Defeating Robbins
The Blue Knights, boasting one
of the most powerful teams in re
cent years, continued its mastery
of Moore County baseball Tues
day afternoon by defeating Rob
bins 2-1 in 11 innings in a county
playoff game at Aberdeen.
The Blue Knights have now
won 13 games in a row and lost
none.
In Tuesday’s game Southern
Pines collected two runs on two
hits and committed one error.
Robbins had one run on five hits
and two errors.
The Blue Knights scored first in
the fourth inning when Billy
Hamel walked, Lynn van Ben-
schoten singled, and Billy Cox
singled, scoring Hamel.
In the same inning Robbins
scored its lone run on a single by
Freeman, a double by Patrick, and
an error committed by Bob Cline
after McCaskill hit a sharp
grounder to Cline’s third base
post, scoring Freeman.
The game was tied at the end
of the regulation seven innings. In
the 11th Southern Pines, the visit
ing team, scored its other run this
way: Watkins was safe at first on
an error but was tagged outgoing
into second on a fielder’s choice
by Cox.
Cox moved to third following
walks to Boswell and Marley, and
scored the winning run on a sin
gle by John van Benschoten.
Watkins, who has now won five
games, struck out 10 and walked
five in the 11-inning stint.

A. F. PROGRAM
Young men who are interested
in joining the Air Force in “bud
dy groups” may obtain informa
tion by seeing Sergeant Roland
Hughes, local recruiter, at the
postoffice each Thursday morning.
Sgt. Hughes said this week that
Air Force enlistees during May
will remain together throughout
this basic training barring sick
ness or emergency leaves.
Pine seedlings should be set
in the ground at the same depth
they were in the nursery. It’s
better to plant them a little too
deep than not deep enough, how
ever.
