It is that good, appraised only as a picture. “The Swan” is sheer delight, given a beautiful and, obviously, costly production to match its pa latial setting and regal principals. Complementing Miss Kelly among (the latter are the inimita ble Alec Guinness, in his first Hollywood picture, the personable Louis Jourdan, the indomitable but never too regal Agnes Moore- head and Jesse Royce Landis, (who was so delightful in “Meet Me in Las Vegas”) and the always effective Brian Aherne. Cinemascope and Eastman Col or, with Stereophonic Sound, not only do justice to, but also embel lish abundantly tasteful, interest ing and luxuriously designed and furnished sets, and focus a glam orous spotlight on gowns and oth er feminine raiment that will draw ohhhs and ahhhs from the distaff members of audiences ev erywhere. And Charles Vidor’s direction at all times makes the very most of all the splendid talents, raiment and objects d’art at his command to weave an effective spell of com pletely enchanting make-believe for close to two hours. “The Swan” is not only a class production, it is superior and sat isfying entertainment for the whole family anywhere. Photo graphed partly in Asheville, also appearing in it is our own Corbett Alexander of the Midland Road Riding Stables. SUNRISE “The Bottom of the Bottle,” a Twentieth Century-Fox Cinema- Scope production starring Van Johnson, Joseph Cotten and Ruth Roman and scheduled to open Sunday at the Sunrise Theatre, CORRECTION An item in last week’s Pilot stated that Dr. William F. Hollis ter of the Pinehurst Surgical Clin ic and a staff member of Moore County Hospital, had been ap pointed an associate professor of surgery in the Duke University School of Medicine. The item should have read that Dr. Hollis ter was appointed an associate in surgery at the Duke University School of Medicine. STARVIEW Drive-In Theatre Between So. Pinee-Aberdeen INDIVIDUAL SPEAKERS offers three unusual angles in en tertainment values. ) Faithful ^dmirers of Van John son will see their “boy next door” in the peak performance of his career; as an escaped alcoholic convict, a performance that bears out the ^aispected dramatic depths of this actor first encountered in “The Caine Mutiny.” The second angle is the story line itself. The Buddy Adler pro duction, based on a story by Georges Simenon and written for the screen by Sydney Boehm, combines the qualities of sheer, taut suspense with a biting com mentary on one phase of modern- day American high life. The third measure gives a gen erous view of America’s South- ,west, newly captured in Cinema- Scope and De Luxe color and cli maxed with close-up shots of the raging Santa Cruz River at flood- tide.
