Fayetteville 2-6731 Coll. ^%ec inspection WOHiD^S lAROSST Over 1,000 men, or approxi mately one-third the population of Pope Air Force Base at Fort Bragg, are at Camp Mackall and will remain there until completion of runway repair arid resurfacing projects at Pope AFB. The 464th Troop Carrier Group and supporting units have moved all flying operations to Camp Mackall, during the repair work at Fort Bragg. Increased air ac tivity resulting from their pres ence there has been noticed this week over Sandhills towns, par ticularly Pinebluff and Aberdeen, over which'the big planes and oth er aircraft of the Group appear at low altitudes while taking off or landing. Camp Mackall is off No. 1 highway, a few miles south of Pinebluff. At Mackall—site of a huge mr- borne training installation during V/orld War 2—the men are living in tents, working under field con ditions and are continuing all normal work and flying commit ments. Ingram Commanding Col. James Ingram, TAC group commander, has been appointed Camp Mackall base commander during the stay there. by Bennett 8e Penna. Ave. Telephone 2-3211 Camp Mackall has three 5,000- foot runways in fairly good con dition. Nearly all of the buildings there were torn down for salvage purposes several years ago. In order that Camp Mackall serve its present use, the units from,Pope AFB had to set up run way and control tower opera tions, including portable, runway lighting; 150 or more tents; eat ing facilities; camp lighting, water and disposal systems; a field hospital and supply and re fueling facilities. Everything necessary to opera tion of a base and what the Air Force calls ‘-'realization of a mis^ sion” has been established there. Work At Pope The work at Pope A'FB in cludes replacement of faulty con crete slabs and resealing of joints at a runway intersection. In another area of the field, the project calls for replacement of 100 feet of pavement and faulty concrete slabs and resurfacing of one end of a runway. Similar work will then be done in a third area of the landing field. (Some runways will be open to air traffic on May 23 and will remain open for the remainder of the repair period. Other portions of the work will continue through June 12, with completion of the entire project set for June 15. This includes painting of air field markings, stabilizing of run way shoulders and clean-up oper ations. PhMia Windsor 4«151t SBI Agent Speaks To Rotarians On Law Enforcement Law enforcement officers no longer are given a badge, gun and uniform and put to work, but receive many hours of training in police procedures and are put on duty under the guidance of ex perienced officers, J. A. Low- dermilk told the Rotary Club at its luncheon meeting Ftiday. The speaker, who lives at Southern Pines and who is special agent with the State Bu reau of Investigation, told the club members and guests that modern law enforcement is only about 100 years old. The meeting was held at the Southern Pines Country Club. The need for law and order was apparent, however, as long ago as the Pilgrim fathers, when an officer was appointed on their landing on this continent in 1620. There had been so many squab bles on the ship coming over that they found appointment of an of ficer was necessary. Mr. Lowdermilk said that much of his work consists of co operation with county and town officers in criminal investigations and law enforcement. He said that he likss his work and that most officers, once they have got ten into police work, never leave The SBI agent gave several in- terestirig instances of rackets and swindles that are being worked over the nation. He said that when crime is wide-spread and general in a city, it is usually a safe assumption that “higher- ups” are involved. The club had two guests Fri day, the Rev. Martin Caldwell, rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, and Frank Boucher of Erie, Pa.
