Town Budget For 1956-57 Summarized

Highway 1 Thruway.
Included in the street depart
ment budget is $5,000 for resur
facing a minimum of three miles
of our existing paved street mile
age system.
$10,000 is included in this street
department budget for the instal
lation of approximately five
blocks of curbing, gutter, and
new pavement pursuant to the
town’s curb and gutter policy on
existing streets.
Sewerage Depcu±aient
The personal services of this
department is equivalent to ap
proximately three man years of
labor.
During the current year. Sewer
Department expenditures reach
ed an airtime high as the result
of financing major sewer exten-
tions and improvements necessi
tated by the installation of the
new U. S. Highway No. 1 bypass.
Needless to say, this is a nonre
curring expense.
Sewerage Department require
ments for the coming year, con
sequently, are greatly reduced.
Also included under this de
partment is an item in the
amount of $2500 for the purchase
of motorized sewer rodding
equipment to reduce the costs of
man power in the routine mainte
nance of sewer mains and the re
lieving of house sewer lateral
stoppages.
Water Dei>axtment
Operating expenses during the
coming year for the water de
partment are up $6500. $2500 of
this sum is attributable to the
pay increase where approximate
ly eight man years of personal
service labor is employed.
The costs of personal services,
supplies, and materials in this
Department is more directly af
fected by high building activity
than any other Department.
Principal and interest payi-
ments as a result of the issue of
the water bonds May 1, 1956, will
add an additional $8138 to the
Water Department expenses for
the coming year.
Recreation Departmient
No major change is contempla
ted in the recreation program for
the coming year.' Consequently,
the small $4,000 a year allocation
divided in a manner similar to
the allocations last year has been
estimated.
Publicity
No change in the publicity pro
gram during the coming year.
Miscellaneous .
Included under this category is
the expense of elections including
the payment of the rental fee on
the voting machines and the next

Held On Monday
Funeral services for John
Stein, 75, who died Friday at his
home, were held. Monday at 3 p.
m. at the Clark Funeral Chapel.
The Rev. Hoke Coon, pastor of
the First Baptist Church offici
ated. Burial was in Mount Hope
Cemetery.
He was a native of (Germany
who came ,to this country as a
child and became naturalized as
a U. S. citizen. He spent most of
his life in Washington, D. C.,
where he was a baker on the
staffs of the Statler, Shoreha.n
and Mayflower hotels.
I ibi cetired in 1952 and with his |
wife came to Southern Pines.
Surviving are his wife, Mary
Stein; three sons; and three
daughters.

Summer School At
Flora Macdonald
Is Cancelled
A proposed summer school at
Flora Macdonald College in Red
Springs during June and July has
been cancelled, officials of the
school announced this week.
'The administration had com
pleted its selection of faculty
members and the curriculum but
said recent developments had
forced the cancellation.
In 1955 8,130 pedestrians were
killed in U. S. traffic accidents.
Veterans Asked To Convert Bonds
Thousands of World War 2 vet
erans in this state are holding
Armed Forces leave bonds that
have drawn no interest for five
years or longer, and Uncle Sam
would like to pay up—an average
of $200 apiece.

Director of the U. S. Treasury’s
Savings Bonds Division, has an
idea for these ex-G. I.’s who ap
parently don’t need the money
right now. He suggests they re
deem these Leave Bonds and put
the money in Series E Savings
Bonds, which pay 3 per cent in
terest compounded semi-annually
when held to maturity of nine
years and eight months.
Commercial hatcheries in
North Carolina produced an esti
mated H',641,000 chicks during
March—an increase of 26 per
cent over the number produced
during the same month last year.
